I remmeber this being a thing. You would ask to buy a NEW game, and they would open some stupid drawer with a bunch of discs, place it in a game box and sell it as new.

Do they still do this? I'm picking up my PS5 next week from there and was going to head to best buy to buy the games.

That only happens for older games or games they only have one copy of. If you’re getting a ps5 game, you have nothing to fear

Just avoid from buying EBGames altogether. If you have to shop from there and they try to pull their usual BS, just tell them to shove it and buy it elsewhere.

I never understood that practice because AFAIK, they don't ship game disc in bulk, they all come inside the case.

They do it for theft reasons. Who is going to steal an empty display case? But it's a bad practice because it's not new once it's open regardless of what they say.

That's not the reason. They have tons of replacement cases and can print the cover. They are already doing that for unreleased games.

They let employees take games home and play so might as well open it and put the empty case on display.

And use up your redemption code then sell you back as "new".

Or they never took the code out of the open game to being with. So anyone could have used it: saw the codes multiple times in the cases on display.

They just need to go.

Is there a lot of local shops still around selling games? None in my neck of the woods

In has been my experience they open a few new games and put the cases out on the shelf, if you take that game up they usually give you a new sealed copy. If there is only a few copies left they might try and sell you the one that has been opened. It happened to me once as it was their last copy. I declined to purchase it unless it was at used price, they wouldn't go for it

That's awesome to hear. All my local ones have closed down over the years, just can't compete with the amazon's of the world. I miss them, that's for sure
