We use Nexgard Spectra - a combined Heartworm and Tick preventative. No, you will not need a tick collar. Spectra is given monthly.

I use Interceptor ( milbemycin ) chewable tablet for heartworm once every 6 weeks starting in June and ending in December, and K9 Advantix II lotion for ticks and fleas applied monthly from April to December.

Nexgard is a good one, but I feel that drugs in its class(Nexgard,Bravecto,Simparica) are not quite as safe as putting on the Advantix lotion since that class can rarely cause seizures.

I feel the least safe one for tick and flea is spinosad ( Trifexis, Comfortis )

My vet prescribed Nexgard for my puppy, but once she gets over 6 months of age, she'll be on Simparica. I think the vet prefers Simparica, but Simparica is only for dogs over 6 months of age. Both Simparica and Nexgard treats fleas and ticks so you won't be needing something separate for ticks.
