Well, Dollar Tree went from 1.25 to 1.50 in Canada.

It’s not just Dollarama increasing prices. Dollar Tree is going to increase the price on all their items to $1.50 each this April.

Still most items under $1.50 is not much of an increase. A 20% increase, whereas Dollarama is closer to 25% on top of the increases across most products from 2 to 3 and 2 to 3.50.

This is exactly what they will do. The other items will increase as well. I bet the $1.50 items will be $2.

That's true. And Dollar Tree has had their $1.25 price point for over 10 years now (since 2008). Unfortunately, inflation was going to lead to an eventual price increase.

4 dollars items were introduced in 2015. Compounded inflation since certainly justify a price hike.

4 dollars is just ceiling and you have to look at average sale price

For example, in 2015 when they introduced 4 dollars, might be average sale price is 1.9 dollars(just throw numbers there), now average price is 3.5 dollars , that's still a price increase even without new 5 dollars cap

Dollarama will hike some prices to $5, another sign of rising costs
Amid record profits, Canadian discount retailer Dollarama has announced it will soon begin selling some products for $5. It’s the latest example of rising costs for Canadians — a trend that’s worrying anti-poverty advocates.

I don't necessarily believe that $4 items are going to automatically become $5 items.
I think the store is simply looking for a way to raise the price to $4.25-$4.75 on many $4 items that keep costing them more.
I look forward to seeing their idea of what a $5 item will now be.

Hopefully that $4 pillow they sell can stay $4, but I'm not holding my breath.
(To guess what might jump from $4 to $5 first, it just might be the pillow...)

That's certainly what happened when they raised their cap to $4 a few years ago.

I have no problem with raising the cap even further as long as it means new stuff that sells for far more elsewhere.

You just speak with your wallet. If you do and they take a hit they will notice. Simple as that.

A $10 cap was supposed to happen (a competing store) with the return of Bi Way stores, but then, sadly, the founder passed away.
It's too bad too, because I was looking forward to that store opening up!

Nothing over $10 ever:

If that were to have happened, Toronto would have had Dollar Tree stores, ($1.50 max at most locations) Dollarama stores (soon to be $5 max)
and
a Bi Way $10 max store.

lol they had $10 flat-pack furniture that wasn't any better than pressed cardboard.

But once you are at $10, the possibilities are endless!
