The question is, does it have a built-in DAC?

Thats a $4 adapter. Dont you think you are asking a bit much for $4 ?

Which location were these at? Waterpark place in Toronto doesn't have em.

I’d stay away from plugging a possibly non-compliant adapter into a premium phone.

I am guessing that this is for phones/tablets with no headphone jack ?

The official Google adapter is US$8 at Best Buy USA and includes a DAC, the Apple adapter is $10 on Apple Canada, so not that far fetched to assume a cheaper brand being cleared out at Dollarama might have a DAC. OP mentioned it works with MacBook, wouldn't that require a DAC?

Not at all asking too much. The Apple USB-C to 3.5mm has a DAC and it's $10. The Google adapter has a DAC as well and it's usually $10-15.

Let me clarify that I'm not asking because an adapter with a DAC is better. It's important because some phones/tablets still employ their own DAC and actually output analog from the USB-C. Many phones, including my Pixel 2 XL, don't have a DAC anymore and require the adapter to have one.

Note that I'm referring to phones without a 3.5mm jack. Of course all phones with the headphone jack have an internal DAC.

Pretty sure that if you read the fine print that it specifies that this works only with "non-premium" phones.

Yeah not a premium phone if it doesn't have a headphone jack

The irony is that only premium phones really need this. Midrange phones like the 3a all have the jack built in.
