Donating old car

Hi guys. I'm buying a new car and have a question about donating my old car(worth nothing). When I buy the new car and get new plates and sign the ownership over to the towing company, do I just take my plates and plate portion to the MTO? I'm very unfamiliar with this process as I've always let the dealer do everything on trade ins. Thanks.

Consider actually donating it to some place where you get a benefit. Kidney Car, or a local high school. At my school, we will take your donated car and use it to teach students. AND, you get a tax receipt for the book value of the car (which is likely higher than you think). If you're in Ottawa, send me a PM...

You can just have your dealer transfer your old plates to your new car, no need for new plates. You don't need to sign over the title to the towing company, they won't care, they won't be transferring it to themselves.

To your question (bolded): yes. This is what you do.

Here is my experience with (Ontario) Kidney Car

Donated a 30 year old car BMW - road safe, plated, low millage

Had winters on, decided to give them summer tires with rims as well

Receipt received: $300

Lesson learned. Next time it's Kijiji "as is"

Most any running car you can get $500-1000+ for as-is depending what it is. Just depends if you want the hassle or not.
Wreckers will give you most likely $300 tops, and tax donation places about the same...

I offer $500 without even looking at it. Up to $1000 if in decent shape. Let me know. Grinning Face With Smiling Eyes Just kidding, but these young timers if body is in good condition are getting more and more popular these days. You can't go back, but $300 is insulting. I checked them before and decided to sell my car privately "as is" for parts only.

Put it on kijiji for $1500 firm or if you just want it gone, drive it to a scrap yard but keep in mind the cat on it alone could be worth a few hundred bucks, alloy wheels $50 each, battery etc are all worth money. Don't give it away, literally.
