Done the job interview, mistake to email and ask when they are making a decision?

Applied for a gov job, passed the testing, got invited to an interview, seemed to go well. But I didn't ask when they are making their decision and now another company is likely going to make me an offer. My first choice is the gov job. Do I just accept the other offer and if the gov job comes available I just suddenly jump ship or should I email the person I talked to, say ty for meeting with me and do you know when you will be making a decision? That way I can deal with the other company more in good faith. ?

You can email the gov job you had been wanting and asked them if they still want you and when they will make a decision, but ask them nicely. I think that will be fine.
