Door hinges sizing

I hope everyone are safe and healthy. I'm trying to replace a interior door and hinges for master ensuite. The old door had 2 of 3" hinges. The new door is heavy and 28 X 80. I'm planning to put 3 hinges. I've searched internet many say for 1 3/8 door I got to use 3 1/2 hinges. As you can see on the photo, if I use 3 1/2 hinges, there is no room for setbacks. The old hinges were 3". Could you help me? Thanks.

Hi,

If I understand you correctly, the old/lighter hinges fit on the new door correctly but the recommended heavier/wider hinges don't fit on the new door correctly. You can probably use the lighter hinges with the heavier door, it means they will wear out sooner. How long they last will depend on how often the door is opened & closed. The other option is to return this door & get a pre-hung door assembly.
