Good to know its still accepted. Will try again next time.
You do need to flash your Nexus card regardless

If you have no toll account or balance it will then charge EZ Pass instead

I had this issue where one of my transponders wouldn't work with the whirpool readers but it would work elsewhere.

I asked for a replacement transponder, sent my old one back and problem solved.

I have the NY E-Zpass. I've travelled a bunch of states along the NE corridor - NJ seems to have the most shocking high tolls of all the states I've been through and poorly designed toll booths - as in a major exit obscured behind the booths that can catch you in the wrong lane if you are not prepared.

Not just NJ …
It seems to happen in various states

Right Lane / Booth for Exit 123

Ya mess that up … and it could be a costly mistake to drive to the next exit
And find your way back to the road you wanted
Or drive back, and no doubt go thru the Toll Booth again … in the opposite direction
That also has an offshoot exit … to the road you initially wanted

I don't know what you deem as the "most shocking high toll" in NJ but when I flew into EWR and drove to Philadelphia the cost was US$10.78 to and US$9.69 return on the NJTP (roughly 60 minutes each way) with my EZPass. When you consider the toll on the Walt Whitman Bridge into Philly is US$6.00 it helps keep things in perspective. Generally speaking US tolls are reasonable for the convenience, access, and location travelled especially in the North East but it's all relative. I'm paying US$18.29 to drive from Exit 50 to Exit 15 on the NYS Thurway (roughly 5 hours) en route to Manhattan and that's before the US$17.63 toll charge for the George Washington Bridge.

Do we ever have to give back/return the EZ Pass transponder?
I mean they mail us a FREE transponder to use on the assumption we’ll use it, but if we don’t use it for many years (and don’t plan to use it anymore) will they ask for it back?

I think in most cases it would be YOU the USER who would initiate the return
So as to CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT
And you’d get your money refunded that’s being held … as a balance … on your EZ-Pass Account

At least that’s how financing seems to work in most States

You’d have to check what your account status is for the State Authority who issued your transponder

EDIT / ADD …
The other reason people return / exchange Transponders from time to time
Is cuz their batteries die

EZ-Pass transponder last about 7-8 years.
I called NY authority to check. They send a new transponder, but I had to return the old one back within 30 days or they will charge for it.

I usually plan my trips to avoid as much of the toll as possible, unless I'm pressed for time.

Things like going from Exit 1 - Exit 7 on the NJ Turnpike via I-295 instead, then getting off at Exit 9 and taking US 1 to the free portion of the Garden State Parkway between exits 130 - 141, before taking US 22 into US 1 & 9 and getting back on the Turnpike for the free portion between 16E and the northern end of the Turnpike to the GWB.

Only toll there is between Exits 7 and 9, but it'll be an extra 30-45 minutes. At least there's cheap gas on the local roads.

You mail it back when you're done with your account, but it doesn't cost you anything to keep it. They do charge a lost transponder fee. (I left my E-ZPass in a car which I sold to Carvana).

Thanks.
So moral of the story is, just keep it.. Nice freebie.
It’ll cost you time and money to send it back if you are completely done with it.

Still think you’ll find …
They won’t send you back the FUNDS ON HOLD IN YOUR ACCOUNT
When you want to CLOSE OUT YOUR EZ-PASS ACCOUNT
UNLESS YOU SEND BACK THE TRANSPONDER

So that’s a loss of around $ 25 US … or more *
Right there

* Depending on the State
And what you’ve agreed to in your Account Set Up
As the Automatic Funding / Top Up Amount

There's no hold if you do direct debit/credit or auto-refill pay-per-trip

Not sure what you mean …

My EZ-Pass transponder account is tied to my CC
It auto refills when I get below a certain amount …
(aka money that’s ON HOLD in that EZ-Pass Account to fund the Tolls the Transponder is used for )
The auto refill amount I have it set at is $ 25 US
Whenever my account balance gets to $ 10 US

If I was to REQUEST A CLOSE OUT of my EZ-Pass account today
They’d want the Transponder back
To not return the Transponder
I’d lose whatever amount of US $ is in that account no doubt
Be it $ 10.01 or $ 25.00

Thats what I’m talking about

* NOTE … Some might lose more than others
All depends on the State who issued the Transponder
And … how much money each State expects one to fund the EZ-Pass Account with
I know some states aren’t $ 25 … they are $ 40 or $ 50

Agree that when closing the account, transponder must be returned.
However, you can set it up to not have any funds on hold and carry a $0 balance. see screenshot
There's no auto-refill threshold setup.

There is no funds on hold.
You have an option to not have auto replenish.
Like someone else here, I also have a zero balance on my account.
There is no loss on my part. I gain a freebie transponder.
Sounds like they’ve suckered you into automatically replenish your account so you are forever going to have FUNDS ON HOLD IN YOUR ACCOUNT. Better get that changed lol

As we travel a lot …
It works for us
Crossing the border at least once a month

Curious what State / issuing authority doesn’t have a pre payment arrangement

Mine is also set to auto-add funds using my credit card if it falls below $10. I went online and checked what you and above poster are saying about no holds and it looks like yours is setup to auto withdraw from bank account instead of credit card.

From EZPassNY website: https://www.e-zpassny.com/en/about/plans_popup.shtml

PAY PER TRIP with Standard Plan: This is a "post-paid" plan that enables you to link your E-ZPass account to your bank checking account and pay for all your E-ZPass tolls once per day, direct from your bank account, for the days on which you have E-ZPass toll usage. No money is held as "prepaid balance" like with the other E-ZPass plans, there is no need to provide a credit card number, and your account is not charged until you incur tolls (except in some circumstances on the night you sign up). If you optionally provide a backup credit card payment form the credit card will serve as a secondary payment method if the bank account withdrawal fails for some reason. For more information see the PAY PER TRIP FAQ. Plan Code: (PPT)

New customers may use the PAY PER TRIP plan if they select the plan description "PAY PER TRIP with Standard Plan" during signup. Existing E-ZPass customers:

Go to www.e-zpassny.com and sign-in to your account
Go to Plans and select "PPT"
Follow the instructions to enter your banking information (if not already linked to your account) and complete the PAY PER TRIP enrollment
PAY PER TRIP is not available to Business or Commercial customers.

Uh NO, there is no auto withdraw.
You think I’m crazy to give them my bank account info?! Face With Tears Of Joy
The “Auto-Replenishment Requested” checkbox is unchecked. Nothing further is required.
If my funds drops to zero there is no forced credit card reload and there is no bank account info required to take out funds - just the way it should be!
I’m at $0 balance.

Don't see this option on my online account at https://www.e-zpassny.com/. Can you tell where you have this option. Even the screenshot shared by another user above also has Checking account greyed out so it looks like they have also set up to auto pay using bank account.
