Eavesdropping while negociating

I wouldn't think it would matter anyway since the Salesperson and Manager work as a team against you anyway regardless of what the salesperson tells you. The manager will be told everything by the salesperson so that they can formulate a strategy against you.

Yes it's common for a few reasons;

1. They don't trust the Sales Rep you're working with and want to make sure that he/she isn't lying to them when they come to work on the deal

2. The Sales Rep you're working with might be new / has made some recent missteps and is being shadowed to make sure they're doing their job properly

3. It could be the "Floor Manager" who is on standby to see if you're going to walk - if they hear the conversation heading away from the sale, it's likely they'll jump in to the conversation to try and close the deal... This is the most likely scenario

4. The Sales Manager might just be bored and walking around in the showroom

5. The Sales Manager might be expecting to jump in anyway to handle negotiations and wants to have as much information as possible to make sure he/she knows what you've been working on

Sales Manager involvement in Canadian dealers is common ... eavesdropping is part of that involvement.

Just have your OTR numbers prepared ahead of time and walk if you can't get close to that number.
