Here goes nothing folks. This is take number 2 for the Dell Wyse 5470. This machine is an upgraded version of the one posted in September of 2020, see thread linked at the top of this post.

It's a good solid thin client turned laptop for the right price.

The N4100 CPU is a respectable low-end performer and should be Windows 11 ready.

God bless, gents.

Hard to say, but I doubt it. It's quiet and cool, most likely not fanless though.

It turns out this FHD-version laptop with less storage and an eMMC was selling for approx. $300 all-in during my old thread (see first post in predecessor thread).

We see progress on pricing here, at only $250 all-in, and more SSD storage on top (128GB SSD vs 16GB eMMC).

Not bad.

Can anyone comment on the battery life?

Was looking at the Chromebooks for long battery life but will get this instead if battery life is decent at this price point.

bdckr wrote: Cheers, thanks for the good deal.

My initial reluctance was never having used m.2 SSDs before. I know that there are different notches that limit what drives with the m.2 form factor will fit. I didn't want to waste money on the wrong SSD.

I bought a 256 GB m.2 NVME lower tier brand instead of saving $15 on 128 GB not for the space, but to increase the life of the SSD. Lower tier instead of brand name because $$, and it still has the original MMC 16 GB drive still in it to repeat this process if the stick ever fails.

The 8 GB RAM stick arrived today and is already installed. 8 GB instead of just 4 GB to decrease the chance that a lack of RAM would ever compromise the life of the SSD, and when looking at no-name brand RAM, there wasn't enough separation in price between 4 GB and 8 GB.

So for the equivalent of $355 before tax, I've got a used computer that has 95% of it's original battery capacity, 12 GB of RAM, a 256 GB m.2 NVME drive, a (probably) legit version of Windows 10 Pro in a reasonably small package with a decent screen, I can't complain. Of course, the CPU still performs way worse than my i7-930 computer that's 11 years old, but ... it was $355. Perfect for carrying around with me for light use.

The hardest part was getting over the idea of that a big chunk of the money was for shipping. But where else could I get something like this at this price even without paying for shipping?

Thanks again.
DanP wrote: All sold our now it seems. With those upgrades and that battery life, crazy good deal. Wish I had done it.
Here are the self-reports from the old thread. Remember that the guy above spent for an SSD and RAM, you only really need to buy another 4GB RAM stick for cheap and you're golden at 8GB RAM (2x4). Those that want to splurge can upgrade to a 256GB NVMe SSD.

I won't vouch for this, but because this was originally suppose to be a thin client laptop... they appear to have souped up the I/O.

USB C with DP 1.2 (4K60)
HDMI 2.0a (4K60)

See the I/O section of the first post.

The manual suggests this unit can support (2x) independent 4K60 outputs on the Celeron model (this model).

This is extremely rare on a machine this cheap, but makes it an excellent productivity laptop at this price.

I would say by a country mile, yes, but I'm biased.

It's faster, better I/O, FHD Screen, and Windows 10 Professional.

Granted it's refurbished and lacks 1 year warranty, but comes with eBay's Buyer Guarantee which is very strong.

It also costs less all-in.

The Celeron N4100, without linking to Userbenchmark, how does it compare to an older i5 or i3? I see four threads, but a 6W TDP has me a little concerned. My dad is using an old Thinkpad T420s with an i5-2520M, 8GB, and a SATA SSD, exclusively for web browsing. I'm not entirely sure if this will be an upgrade.

i5 2520M = PassMark 2235
N4100 = PassMark 2463

The laptop above is about 10% faster in general computing tasks. I would venture that it's much faster in hardware processing H264/265 video files and modern video codecs generally. Older i3 / i5 machines are significantly slower for these tasks I find, possibly due to relying on software processing.

I would bet that this laptop will feel faster than the 10% score boost would suggest, but the difference won't be massive.

I found sourcing:
The N4100 appears to use the Intel UHD Graphics 600 processor with 'an advanced video engine with hardware support for the playback of VP9 and H.265 material (8-bit color-depth)'.
