Ebgames forcing you to buy something along with the ps5

I had put my name on the list at my local ebgames so they can notify me when the next shipment of ps5s come in. They just called and said they have arrived and I may book a timeslot to go pick it up. They also mentioned that ebgames policy is that you have to either purchase a brand new ps5 game, ps5 controller or some bundle pack along with the ps5 system. I said I just wanted to purchase the ps5 system alone, but they said it was mandatory to buy something else, if not you cannot ourchase the ps5. So theyre basically forcing you to purchase something along with the ps5.

Any one else experience this?

I'd call corporate and confirm. Also get this out of social media and name the store. They may be giving you something to settle.

I called the number on their site. Not sure if its corporate or some sort of customer service line (1-877-442-6303). The phone rep actually confirmed that its true. They said theyre trying to stop people from reselling PS5s (which is stupid to me because; 1) its none of their ****** business who buys and resells, and 2) if someone resells, they could would do do it either way even if they had to purchase a game or controller om the side). She also said Sony and EBGames together, have made this mandatory. Anyhow, she said she'd have the district manager call me. She called 30mins afterwards. District manager said I was the absolute first person to complain about this, to which I replied that I doubt that. She also asked why I didnt want any games or controller to which I replied thats not really their concern. I just want to grab my PS5 lol.....simple stuff. She said they dont make any exceptions for this rule at all....but this time they will.....

I guess im the special one.....Not sure what EBGames is smokin right now...

Before I get shot at, I am not a reseller. Actually buying one for my household.

That sounds ridiculous. One could buy a Ps5 and just want to use the existing psplus sub and all the good free games with that. Maybe you have a bunch of PS4 titles to play on it.

This is hilarious. The used prices from scalpers are plummeting fast ... a lot of them are worried they cannot sell (even at their cost).

Remember, even if they give you a copy of their receipt, your warranty starts from that day. No receipt, you have to rely on manufacture date on unit.

So the longer they hold, the less it'll be worth. Would you still prefer to buy from scalper? Lose to EB or lose to scalper? your choice.

Just going by RFD posters, there was that RFD poster mrtvgame that said he bought a bunch of consoles to scalp. He used to post on this board a lot, complaining about not
knowing when Sony or Microsoft will launch their consoles. After the consoles released, he said he scalped some and conveniently stopped posting here.

That policy is probably meant to prevent the products from going to people that just buy to resell instead of the people that actually want to use them.

I've heard of this in an RFD thread elsewhere. But I don't think it's a company policy, since from what I read, other stores didn't force people to buy a bundle. It's a load of BS, and clearly so since they 'made an exception' for you. Just EB being EB.
I'd also call Sony or hit them up on Twitter to complain since EB is saying it's a Sony/EB policy. If it is, we should hear about it. My guess is its not since as I said, others are saying they haven't run into this issue.
Since EB can't get in on the reselling business (the PS5 is too new), they do the next best thing - jack the price legally. They gotta move those quality Biogenik peripherals somehow...

I don't see how buying a single console from EB is automatically a reselling move, or that a reseller can't find a way to just resell all the extras they were forced to buy it like that. If someone hits up several EB's and has their name on several waitlists then yeah, red flag. But this seems like a lazy way of combatting resellers, and instead punishes people who legitimately want to buy a console. I bought a bundle and I'm fine with it, but I could understand why not everyone would feel the same. The thing plays PS4 games ffs, why should anyone be questioning a consumer that wants to buy it without a game? Besides, buy PS+ for a year and you get 10(?) games automatically. Seems like a dumb way to treat your customers, assume they're all resellers.

That's a terrible policy.

I bought my PS5 on launch day in November and yet to buy a PS5 games or controllers.

There's so much game on the PS+ best of list plus used PS4 games for cheap that I'm in no rush on paying full price for a PS5 game

Why wouldn't they just manufacture the bundles then, like the Ratchet and Crank one, where you could save a little off MSRP.
If Sony is actually in on it with EB as the OP says, that's pretty low even for Sony

Im unsure if Sony is in on it, but I call BS. Im going to guess Sony has no clue. I even asked the rep on the phone if there is a discounted price for the forced purchase, as she herself used the word BUNDLE, but of course there wasnt. Lol. Its a joke.

Blow this up. This is something I expect of grey market shops in Asia, but EB has no excuse - especially not since they're now swimming in money.

Rule of thumb: Bundles should come with a discount. That's why they're called bundles. Anything else tacked on is exactly what it sounds like: Money grubbing scam.

This makes no sense. What's to stop you from buying the item and then returning it?

I'd call out EB games on their social media platform. That's a ridiculous policy.

We have 2 PS5's and 4 controllers. My wife wants one now. If I was going to buy a 3rd which I am planning to do for her birthday, I don't need anything else

Totally. They forced you to purchase something on top of the console?

I thought of this as well, but I never asked. Im sure they wouldnt reject your return afterwards. If they did, people would lose it.

Funny....after all that, I was so busy today that I missed my timeslot to pickup the PS5 lol. Im going to give them a shout tomorrow and see if its still even available for pickup. They probably already sold it to the next in line, especially since their district manager called the store and told them that Im the exception to this BS policy.

Yes - it was a game, a controller or some other random stuff. They specify that the game can’t be on sale, can’t be a preorder etc. At a minimum they squeeze out $70 or so.

I ended up getting mine somewhere else but they’ve been doing this for a months. Even back around Christmas I got one to gift and it had a second controller because of this..back then PS5 was super hard to get, so I gave in.
