eMachines e355 Netbook - Upgrade Ram

Hello All,

I recently purchased an eMachines e355 Netbook. Does anybody know if a 4gb stick would work in place of the current 1gb assuming I upgrade from Win7 Started to Win7 Pro?

I'm debating in buying a new 4gb stick of ram, or a used 2gb stick.

I have heard that these Atom processors only support 2gb of ram in total.

Netbooks should only be able to read 2gb of ram. That being said, I still wouldn't upgrade from Starter to Pro or home its too resource heavy.

Be careful with that operation. I opened one of those (e3XX) netbooks, and it's a real pain in the ass to upgrade. It's really hard to open, and it doesn't support all standard types. You'll need to pry things open and pretty much open the whole laptop.

It was not your typical RAM upgrade, so make sure you research this model thouroughly before getting your tools.

Can Windows 7 starter recognize 2gb of ram?

I have read that W7 starter only takes 1gb max.

If it takes 2gb, that will save me a lot of time.

Hey guy let me know if you find out.

I picked up one of these little guys from SDM today. Sleek looking, but I think it can benefit from the extra RAM.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain.

I have the exact unit. I bought it at Staples about two months ago for $152 (total cost with taxes, coupons, etc). Nice little unit, but terrible audio. It only has one speaker and the volume is rather low, even on max. The unit is actually an Acer Aspire One 533 which has been re-branded as an eMachines (same specs, size, features, etc). In fact, the initial OS install/setup even shows up with the Acer logo.

Nonetheless, you can only upgrade the unit to a max of 2gb (DDR3 PC3-8500 CL7, 204-pin) . DO NOT use a PC3-10600 as it will NOT work! Putting in anything larger than 2gb will be a waste since the system will only recognize the first two. This is typical of most netbooks sold today (rather disappointing).

Here's a step-by-step video on how to upgrade the RAM:

There is a reason why it is limited to 2 GB as per Microsoft's request or else it cannot be recognized as a netbook meaning Microsoft will only recognize it as a laptop and would charge full price for a license to the mfg to install Win7 Home on it.

Microsoft had a list of requirements in order for it to be considered a netbook. It has to do with max ram of 2 GB, screen no larger than 11.6" or 10.1 I can't recall and they can use Win7 starter on it.
