*UPDATE* This refurb model has gone out of stock on Epson.ca. Epson seems to randomly refill the stock. You may want to bookmark this link.

Epson 5050UB seems to be a hot favourite projector among home theatre enthusiasts as it has excellent contrast, brightness, and black levels in its price range. This unit retails for ~$3700. The certified refurbished model is finally in stock at Epson.ca and includes a 2-year limited warranty. I had been on the hunt for a deal on this projector for more than a month now and I just grabbed one today.

Note that this is not a true 4K projector. It is a pixel-shift 2K projector. Nonetheless, the reviewers seem to be overwhelmingly positive.

Here are a couple of good reviews of the unit:

Here's Epson's policy on returns for refurbished items:
Epson does not accept returns on refurbished items except if product arrives defective, in which case, we will provide a replacement with the same model or equivalent. This unit may not include the same software or paper pack as new models.
Side note: if anyone has suggestions for a good retractable 120" screen for this projector, I'd appreciate it.

Nice one.

This is a fantastic projector.

Contrast is way more important than 2k vs 4k, even at huge sizes.

Case in point: here is Forbidden West PS5 on my JVC 590r at 150 inches in size. Not even with a screen because of smashy toddler. One's jaw drops when seeing in person, and this isn't even an ideal room.

Agreed. That is a great projection on your wall. When my budget allows it, I'll definitely upgrade to a JVC. What did the 590r retail for? I haven't been able to find good JVCs for under $4k.

Thanks - video games don't even display it as well as films but I figured Horizon is topical.

I got it in I think 2018 for $3800 from Eastporters. As you know JVC has native 4k now but oh so very pricey.

The LS11000 4k laser version of this projector is released by Epson this month, msrp usd$3999. I suspect there will be sales on the 5050ub everywhere soon.

That's a sweet price point for a JVC. Incidentally, I'll be dropping by Eastporters to pick up a good screen for my new 5050UB.

The Epson LS12000 is a 4k (pixel shifting) laser projector that also seems really good. It is not as good as a JVC DLA laser projector but it is less than half the price.

That is some good quality image...
bought 3800 refurbished yesterday... 5050 is out of the budget right now....
was debating between 3800 and 4010 but all online reviews says ...
with epson projectors the higher the contrast ratio you get more lag...
don't know how true it will be..

so ended up getting 3800... in the budget and better than 3200
will be projecting 120" screen in a full dark room.
P.S. : if you find lots of spelling mistakes in my above comment. This is what happens when you use the physical Keyboard (Blackberry) your whole life and then you have to settle with a virtual Keyboard.

I was eyeing the LS12000 as well. I don't see it in stock with any of the Canadian retailers yet. I couldn't resist pulling the trigger on the 5050UB at the refurb pricepoint which is more than half the price of LS12000 (CA$6500+tax).

Yes that is definitely a great deal and I didn't mean to imply the 5050UB is not a great projector (it is a great projector!). I am still building my home theater in the basement so I am checking all offers every week and I have my eyes on the LS12000. I still have more work to do before it is ready so hopefully the LS12000 will be available by then (but it will be much more expensive than this deal obviously).

Where are you looking? I just scored a 570r for $1800 on Canuck Audio Mart. The seller installed a genuine OEM bulb in November and had just calibrated it. It only has 350 hrs on it!

Best still, the guy is a member of AVSFORUM, so I had the complete record of his experience with the projector from purchase through setup, through sending it in for the CMD fix under warranty.

I really loved my OPTOMA UHD51A (which I'm selling if anyone is interested), but lens shift on the JVC has opened up a whole new world for me!

All good. I just mentioned the price difference for others' benefit. Do let me know what screen you end up going with. That's the one thing I haven't done much research on. Btw, here's the only place that seems to have listed the LS12000 in Canada: https://www.electronicsforless.ca/epson ... 12866.html

To be honest, I didn't have much awareness of the older JVC projector models or how they compared to the newer crop. Sadly, 590r and 570r were not even on my radar. I guess I should have asked around in avsforum first.

Man, this same projector was for sale at $1799 or so before COVID (for refurb) if I remember correctly ... now $2799 is a 'deal'?

Was looking for an 'excuse' to upgrade my HW-45ES to 4K and this seems the minimum to have some benefits, besides the resolution.
Found LG's HU810PW at 3200$, native 4K laser that seems to be on par with the 5050UB

Have to be careful, older JVCs can not have gaming capability due to input lag, and new lamps cost $500. You will be happy with the 5050UB

I'm also looking to eventually upgrade my 45ES to 4k. But all the cheaper options so far are projectors that are white. I know it's just the color, but it would stick out on my black ceiling. Which we had more black options lol

If you watch the Youthman videos on youtube (home theater tours), you would see that it is a terrible projector according to many people, him included. I have not seen this projector personally but I would avoid it and go for a JVC or Epson. Even if it is laser, it is definitely much lower quality than the older lamp based Epson 5050UB.

(look at 25 minutes and listen for a few minutes, at ~30 minutes he compares it to Epson)

In a later video they had a bunch of people come to test projectors, including a calibration expert, and they tried to calibrate it but they could never get a decent image out of it. They didn't even include the LG in the projector shootout (they had 8 projectors) because it is "terrible" and "garbage" (the owner words) and can't compete even with lower priced projectors.
