Esso using Gift card and Speedpass+

I got a $50 card as a gift. Had a balance of $15. Tried to spend $5 on gas, was declined. The clerk checked balance, balance showed ~$30 with a hold of $10 (made no sense). Wouldn't go through. Makes no sense at all. I have a receipt for a car wash with a remaining balance of $15 and the next day a receipt with a balance check of $30 and a declined purchase for $5. I've been meaning to check my balance online to see what it says but I haven't gotten around to it.

I'm always nervous with these kind of things lol
Should I even go back and check if payment was made? I have both the receipt on paper and in my app showing that transaction went through. Hum

Lately, I've had 2 cases where I authorized the pump in the app, and it worked. Then, I proceeded to start pumping gas, and in the middle of filling, the app suddenly showed the pre-authorization as "cancelled".

Thankfully, I always ask for a receipt, so I could see the payment didn't go through. But something is definitely not right with this app. I'll check if an update is available.

Yep, I posted about it in the Auto forum. The app let me use the same $25 GC for maybe $125 or more worth of gas (I stopped keeping track). Eventually the GC zeroed out. I stopped using the app.

So you got $100 of free gas? wow...

I have experienced two similar scenarios using the SP+ app:
1) PreAuth with a ~$66 on a card, pumped $68. Worked, got a receipt. Later I noticed that it did not take the extra $2 off another GC in the account, also it did not zero out the $66 card. However the card did not work again, it would error out if you tried to preauth with it again
2) On one occasion the app preauthed the pump, luckily I set it to print the receipt, it did not at the end. The app did not indicate that a receipt was generated, I walked into the store, had them triple check, and it turns out that the pre auth vanished and it was not paid.

Note that all this happened months ago.

I got this same issue a few weeks ago. I had 2 gift cards left. One with around $36 and the other at $25. Pumped $45. I assumed it would of wipe the card and take the rest from the other. Preauth on pump said $500!? Anyways a few weeks passed and both gift cards still held it's balance. As of today, the $36 one depleted to 0. The $25 is still $25. I have not pumped since (too many shell promos); and I wanted to see how this was handled. No credit card on file yet.

Let's see how the next pump works.

So... Esso stations refused to sell me the giftcard today.... looks like ppl have found out and have been milking this scam this week.

I just had a similar thing happen. Assumed the remainder I owed would be taken off the next gift card. I did notice There is something called "reconciliation id" near the bottom of the receipt. Maybe they eventually charge the credit card on file.

Are you guys using the gift card in conjunction with a Fuel Savings card in the app?

The fuel savings card seems to not apply when I use a gift card anymore in the app. In store they said the same thing. You can only use 1 of fuel savings card or gift card each transaction. That's stupid.

Seems like the app completely disabled gift cards payment?
I had another gift card that I just added to my wallet, tried paying with it but the app keeps saying "error".

Kinda annoying, now I have to go pay inside to use the gift card.

My last 2 pumps were direct from my credit card. Did not feel like dealing with another error. Unlike some who outright promoted fuel theft, I was just hoping the app would fix itself and just work.

I have not touched my other gift card on there yet. All my credit card transactions has the reconciliation id on it.

I selected the fuel discount card + my credit card and used the app, but the fuel discount card was not applied. What gives? Call into customer service?

I always do this in store. They apply both fuel savings and gift card. You have to pay before you fill so I just tell them what’s on the gift card e.g. $25 and then my gift card is fully depleted but I can pump more than $25 because of the fuel savings discount. The employees at your station don’t know what they are doing.
