Montreal to Maldives (Stopover in UAE +$29 CDN) $902+ CDN TAXES INCLUDED! Select Dates in Sept-Nov 2021 & Feb-April 2022

Retailer:
Ethiad Airways
Was searching for flights this morning and discovered Etihad Airways has a really good deal for flights from Montreal (YUL) to Maldives (MLE).

2 layovers each way (Toronto & Abu Dhabi)

Great deal for those people who previously bought accommodation vouchers from Travelzoo for Maldives resorts.

Prices are as low as $902 CDN roundtrip taxes included when you book directly with Etihad Airways (strongly recommended to book direct with the airline since Etihad as a flexible ticket option - free to change your dates or cancel & receive airline credit)

If you want to book a stopover in the UAE (Abu Dhabi UAE Airport code AUH.... roughly a 1 hour drive to Dubai) it says in the fare structure it's free to do so but it's pricing out to be an extra $29 CDN.

Easiest way for me to find working date combinations is to use Google Flights, filter by selecting: Air Canada & Etihad, and space out your dates by roughly one week.

Example:
YUL-MLE: March 19-28 $902 CDN:
https://www.google.com/travel/flights/s ... 1&curr=CAD

YUL-AUH (stopover)-MLE: March 19, March 26 & April 2 $931 CDN:
https://www.google.com/travel/flights/s ... 1&curr=CAD

This deal isn't for everyone, Maldives is usually $1800 RT for flights alone, so you're getting the flights for roughly 50% off plus the option of a free stopover in UAE (Dubai), so 2 trips in one. Both the UAE & Maldives have been fairly safe Covid wise compared to a lot of other locations around the world.

ooops just booked with AC on pretty much the same date as OP for 1500 from Toronto to MLE. I didn't book stop over though as Abu Dhabi is not open for visitors and if they still don't open up next year, it may jeopardize the rest of the journey....

No, but you can hop off in Toronto on your return trip and skip the last leg.

If you skip the last leg of the journey (YYZ to Montreal) are you able to get your checked bags out at YYZ?

While there have been some incredible (i.e. sub $450) economy fares from YUL to much of Europe, fares to relatively niche low-volume destinations such as the Maldives are actually pretty 'good' deals under $1K especially out of YUL where we dont have quite the number of long haul flights such as YYZ.

In addition, Etihad happens to be one of the top tier airlines for both soft and hard products (i.e. planes/airport/lounge options and the service levels at each) and as such is likely to be quite the nice experience - even in economy.

Doing Hidden city ticketing such as this can work, but it's highly possible (and probable) that they will route your bags straight through to your final destination (YUL) and there is no guarantee that you'll have access to your checked baggage in Toronto. Personally I wouldn't take that risk myself - the only times I will get 'out' at an earlier city is when I have all my stuff with me in carry on.

My $0.02 based on a fair bit of experience and research.

Good if you don't have checked luggage. Otherwise, if you do, your luggage is going to YUL.

Super tempted at this price because I have an AP ticket tentatively booked last year via New York for MLE for this coming December.
However, I heard ET flights to north america are zoo these days because all the passengers from India, etc. have to choose either ET or Turkish (TK) due to the ban. The chance of exposure to Covid Delta+ is likely very high.
Hopefully by then things die down a bit.
Definitely get your jabs folks before the trip!

Maldives may be safe, but the flights are likely not...
Good deal though

Don't you have to pick up your checked luggage and go through customs in Toronto?

Does Etihad allow full cancellation within 24 hours of booking?

All the international flights I've been to, bag has always gone to the final destination. I've only once had to pick up my bag, and check it in again; in Boston when returning from LHR, on my way to YYZ.

When you check the bags in, ask them to short-check the bag only to YYZ. They are able to do it. Otherwise, you can book a flight that has along or even overnight stopover in YYZ. Or even have your flightbland at YYZ but have your last leg take off from YTZ. They will only check your bags to YYZ.

Edit: you ARE going g to the Maldives. Just pack a few shirts and bathing suits in your carry on and you're set. No real need for a checked bag.

If Toronto is your first port of entry to Canada, you always have to pick up your bags, clear custom, and drop your bags before you go to your connecting domestic flight, unless they have changed the rules since the pandemic as I have not travelled even once since then :-(
