Expired credit card gift card

Hey fellow RFDers!

Sometime ago, I bought tires online and received a prepaid credit card with a value of 70 CAD.

I recently discovered the said lost card and found out it had expired last November.

Is there a way to get back this 70 CAD?

I figured out if anybody could help me with this, it had to be a RFDer! Hugging Face

Thanks!

Look on the back of the card and go to their specific site for details.
Most prepaid credit cards will reissue another card when the expiration date on the card has passed.

Exactly. Contact the credit company of the card and simply explain that the card you have had expired. They should have a process for issuing a new one.

Good luck!

If it's a Vanilla pre-paid card, be prepared to lose the money. They say that they will replace it if it expires, but you have to get someone from customer service on the phone. There is no other way. I've tried for weeks for my mom, and there's no answer on the line. I did some research and even if you get the cs agent on the line, and they send the card, it might not have any money on it. Apparently they are a complete scam (that are somehow "legit").

How old is the card? Could it be a monthly maintenance fee has brought the value down to zero?

Prepaid credit cards have an actual expiry date printed on them, it's usually around 2 years. OP probably lost his a long time ago.

But some companies carry a monthly maintenance fee, @Mars2012 is correct in asking.
Either thing could be happening (expired / balance pulled)

Yup, the OP may have little left when asking for a replacement card if it had monthly fees as well. I've only seen monthly fees on mall gift cards myself but I'm sure other cards have them too.

There's a few prepaid cards with fees floating around

It worked! I called. Took like 10 mins. The 70 CAD is intact.

I’ll receive my card by mail in 10-15 days.

I was offered the virtual one but prefer to have it on hand.

Thanks RFD!! 🤩Ok Hand Sign

Edit: there was a 10 CAD fee. So the card will be 60 CAD.

These cards are a hassle. I always go for the virtual card. Some can just be put on Apple Pay.

There is still the issue of using the last few dollars of the card after a purchase so it’s much easier just to get rid of the thing by buying a Costco cash card or similar.

Which ones can be put on Apple Pay?
I use up those remaining small balances of prepaid cards by just paying them into my cell phone or internet bill.

Pay your utility or mobile phone bill and drain every last penny. I have yet to have a card with anything but a zero balance at the end ...

RFDers know how to play the game. The average person who gets one of these as a gift won't. The'll go to make a $20 purchase, and when it's declined, will think "oh well, I guess it's empty" and toss it, not realizing that there might be $19 left on it.

I think the proper term should be called Visa/MC gift card. Most , if not all people , think about Visa/MC as credit cards. Visa/MC are just the company names and yes their main businesses are credit cards. But credit cards mean the credit card companies extend ‘credit’ to you for spending first, then you pay them back later when you get your credit card statement. Even the term prepaid is not needed for gift cards because everyone knows that you have pay to buy gift cards(I.e. prepaid). That is why we don’t have to say prepaid Homedepot gift card, we just simply say Homedepot gift card. I guess the reason people say prepaid credit card is to distinguish between real credit cards issued by Visa/MC and gift cards issued by Visa/MC. Prepaid and credit shouldn’t be used together because mean different things. Prepaid means you put your money in first before you spend it. Credit means you don’t need to put anything in before spend it(I.e. you borrow the money).

Some people like me , would keep track of the balances on each card, and do split payments whenever possible to use them up. You should be able to check balance online or phone call.

Yes that’s what I do when I buy them to use myself. That’s why these ‘gift’ cards make such horrible gifts. Why make a gift recipient jump through those hoops to get the full value of your gift?

Since some ‘new’ store cash register can detect the Balance on each Card like a normal store gc and you don’t have to tell the cashier the exact amt on each Card, in order to do split payments, the technology exists to make it easier.

I have heard that it exists but have yet to encounter it anywhere I have tried.
