Expiring westjet travel bank credits - advice?

Hi all,

I'm looking for advice/feedback on how to manage my expiring westjet travel bank credits. A flight in April 2020 was cancelled due to covid, so I was given $460 in credit in my travel bank. Luckily, Westjet extended the deadline for two years, but now I'm at that 2-year mark and still don't feel comfortable travelling. I don't think any friends or family have any trips on the horizon either.

Given that they currently have a Flexible Change/Cancel policies for travel affected by COVID-19 until March 31, I am thinking I could book something now for the fall, cancel it if I still don't feel comfortable flying, and then hope to have the refunded travel bank credits good for another year or so. Any red flags with this plan?

Side note: the total cost will likely be higher than the credit, and I'll pay the difference with westjet dollars.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yes, it'll work, but you may wish to call in when you cancel. Travel Bank is supposed to get a new expiry for two years from the date you choose to cancel, but this is very YMMV if you self-cancel online.

Another alternative is if you transfer your travel bank to someone else. That will also reset the expiry.

Similar situation here. Talked to a Westjet CSR a few months ago and she told me that any credits expiring between Jan 1 - Mar. 31 will be automatically extended by 180 days and that I should get an email confirming such. Make sure your online profile allows them to send you emails!

Fingers crossed that it actually happens. I have the phone call recorded just in case.

You may want to call them to confirm for yourself.

FWIW I voluntarily canceled our flights Mar 2020 before WJ cancelled them.

edit: Just logged into my WJ account and I see my relevant credits have indeed been extended to this fall (but I did not receive an email despite my account settings allowing such)

Does anyone know if Westjet phone customer rep can allow us to group 3 forms of payments together? (WJ Dollars + Travel Bank + Credit card)? It says it can only do 2 payments on its FAQ, but i swear i read somewhere someone mentioned they can do it over the phone...
