Exterior door company contract question

I am about to purchase exterior and storm doors for my house. The total is about 15k. The sales agreement states that 50% is to be paid when signing the agreement which I understand. The remaining 50% is to be paid one week prior to installation. Is it normal for the company to request 100% payment before they install? Thanks in advance.

Somewhere over the r…
That seems unusual. No way in hell would I ever sign that.

Who gets paid 100% in full before the work is even started? I am starting a 200k reno and only need 10% down and 15% more once work has started

We had the same person who did my in-laws house do all our doors and windows and he didn’t ask for a dime before the windows and doors were installed.

We did 25% down for windows and doors, balance after installation.

I wouldn't pay 100% before the job is finished.

50% to order and 50% on the day of makes sense. Unless they use credit cards and then sometimes we will put a hold on the card for the second half 5-7 days before we come, but not charge it.

Depends on the company. We have windows on order, was 30% deposit, 40% due when they start, remaining when finished. The other quotes had variations of this, either 40% or 50% before start.

Don't sign it. If they are a reputable company, they will ask for a modest 10% down and then full payment on installation. The company I went with didn't even require a down payment and installed everything and the sales guy wasn't even in a rush to receive payment.

10% for custom anything is insanely low. The only ones I know that do this (cough cough Centennial) do it because they overcharge the crap out of you.

Curious how many doors are you getting done for $15k? Seems expensive (although everything is these days)

Front door with 2 sidelites can run $10k easy, Storm doors are $800-1000 for quality, plus a back man door w glass and a solid garage door is an easy $15k these days.

I remember it wasnt so long ago a really nice single painted front door w decorative glass was around $2200. Thats a white door with clear glass now.

Plain front door (no glass), with 2 sidelights (frosted glass), side door with frosted glass, steel door from garage to laundry room and 2 storm doors. I just received a quote from another company for 17k.

Wow,... and you know the price won't go down much as people are still willing to pay at these rates

Have you looked at the price of exterior doors lately? Especially the ones with the side panels... it's insane.

I changed:
Front Double door with Iron inserts (34" each) - $1100
Garage Door (Steel 34") - $200
Side door with iron insert (34") - $600

This is material only as I installed them myself, but $15k for labour seems pretty steep. I know the prices of doors has gone up but even if you double my material cost that's $13k labour.

For a point of reference, I replaced all our exterior doors in early 2021. Placed the order in Dec 2020 and they were installed around March 2021. Main door with 3/4 smoked glass and 2 full length sidelights, painted to match the exterior, interior was left white. A metal door for the garage entrance, same colour as main door, and a metal side door with 1/4 height glass insert and it came to around 10K. So now that everything is much more expensive, a $15K quote isn't all that insane.

If you were happy with the quality and workmanship, do you mind sharing your contractor?
Thanks

You clearly bought builder doors at a home store. Quality doors aren’t that cheap.

For reference, a single front door I can easily build in our software for $1100 to $8000 so details matter.

I bought these directly from a door manufacturer near Barrie, not a big box store. I welcome you to come check the quality out.

Would u mind sharing some pictures?
I’m also curious on the diy install of exterior doors. How do the hinges on replacement doors line up with existing frame. Did you supply the exact measurements or there’s some standard that’s usually followed?
