Exterior Door Outside Handle - Smaller than new one so holes do not line up

Our original (40 years old) exterior door handle broke - it is the handle on the outside of the door (where it has two holes - one for the lever to connect to the interior knob, and the other to hold the bottom of it in place. Like this one:

So we bought a Schalge lockset with the assumption these were all a standard size. Our Schlage is now longer than our original, and even with the adjustments you can make, does not fit the bottom hole. If we were to install it, there would be a small hole exposed from the outside in.

We plan to eventually just get a whole new exterior door, but have been dragging our feet on it, so we want to keep the Schlage set.

Any ideas on a solution? Is there some sort of steel plate you can buy for this purpose that will cover the entire lockset or something? The door is wood, and while I could use wood plugs and attempt to stain them (to match) I worry it would look very poor, especially considering I need two different stains since the exterior has aged much more than the interior side.

What you're looking for is an escutcheon plate.

I only dabble in their commercial hardware, so I'm not sure if there's a retrofit kit available for such situations though...

The cheapest way would either be a wood plug painted/stained to match or just filling the hole with a smaller sex-bolt/through-bolt.

Steel or aluminum plate would also work as you said. You could either get a stock push plate from a hardware store (usually about 4" x 16") or get a metal shop to cut you one to fit out of aluminum or stainless. Problem with those is they're usually just big ugly square pieces.

If you're going to replace it in the next couple years, I'd opt for the easy fix as a custom escutcheon backplate is going to get pricey I'd think.

Why waste time? Either get a handle that fits or buy a new door.

Drill a hole and cover the old one with wood filler, very easy and cheap.
It also doesn't look bad.

Way to go captain obvious. Schalge and Weiser handlesets do not fit in the opening, otherwise I would just spend the $50 and get one for the time being.

Thanks - I was thinking the wood filler might be the quickest way to go but was hoping there might be a pre-made solutions. But the plate sounds like a lot of work, and in the end, might not look that great either. I have some wood filler that should work - will give it a shot!

Yea, it's fairly easy, i had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, the lady i bought the door handle from warned me that most of the time, there is a difference in size between the new ones and old ones so you will have to drill a hole to make it fit. She showed me her own door that she did the same thing and it looked fine so i figured ill give it a shot.

You can buy escutcheons and filler plates to place between the new handle/holes and covering the old holes. Not something you can get at Home Depot/etc but they are available.
