seemed to work, purchased $ gift card and received 2 e-mails with gift card, first with value I purchased, and second e-mail with the 20% value

I did and it shows in the Shopping Trips section. According to ebates, that's 2.5% extra.

The 20% bonus, if you selected Email as the delivery channel, comes as a 2nd email with a separate link to an e-Card.

Can I assume that gift cards purchased in Canadian currency can be used in the U.S?
(albeit at the current u.s. exchange rate)

My thought process is to avoid the additional 2.5% exchange fee the credit card companies typically charge.

Yes.

This is the HUGE advantage, and why one should purchase these.

buy it in CAD, and when you use it as a USD property they use the Oanda spot rate.

No markup

Plus the 20% kickback puts the dollar on par.

For me it was almost instantaneous (maybe 1 minute or so), but this was close to 2pm EST.
