Why is any social housing even located in Toronto? People have a right to shelter, but not in the middle of an expensive city with a housing shortage for WORKING people.

Liberals - all they care about is foreigners and societal leeches.

TBH I was thinking the $1.6 billion repair back log was intentional so they could justify selling all the properties and giving people rent voucher for market rent instead. I guess not.

I just saw this story last night and was going to post the same.

When I lease out high demand properties in prime areas of Toronto, I ALWAYS get applicants that are on social assistance. No job, bad credit, but the government pays their rent for the property.

Why is the government paying for these people to live in high demand houses? There are people who work in Toronto and have to live outside of Toronto for the cheaper rent (or they have to buy outside of Toronto for the cheaper price). Yet we pay for people with no job to live in prime areas in Toronto?

That's like the government paying for people on social assistance to eat all their meals at Harbour 60.

don't worry, this is just a publicity stunt for the Liberals before election.

all of this will be scrapped as soon as they lose the election in the Fall... you can guarantee a more sensible government taking over anyway

Also, most of the people in these community housing facilities don't take care of the flats and hence, the flats deteriorate very fast. Why should we pay to repair buildings that deteriorate because of their lack of care?

Socialist housing never works. Just cut the community housing, demolish the buildings, sell the land, and relocate them to somewhere not Toronto and Vancouver core. Support only those not able to find a job. These people are not entitled to live in Toronto or Vancouver core. If they want to live here, they should pay for it themselves.

I mean, a lot of those properties are not cared for by the owners (the government). Go walk by government housing....most cases the exteriors are in such a terrible state of disrepair. So while the residents may not take care of the proeprties, the slumlords (the government) don't either. I'd rather spend money on community housing than overpaying crooked politicians or TTC ticket collectors 6 figures.

That is the nature of rental buildings, nobody cares for property that they don't own. This is worse when it comes to public owning the build, in which case even the "landlord" doesn't care. This is the issue that plagued communism, when everyone owns it, then no one owns it.

Good to know who not to vote for, it is ridiculous to sink billions of dollars into a never ending hole. What they need is a permanent solution.

If we got rid of all the community housing in and around downtown, the core would genuinely become the Manhattan 2.0 that we want it to be. It's this ghetto housing that has been the bane of the city centre for my entire lifetime.

Even removal of smaller problematic items like the block that contained the Big Slice pizza store and the youth centre that was beside it makes a world of difference.

They should get rid of covenant house too.

The core should be clean and safe, and reserved for gleaming condos, great stores, university students, and an iconic Dundas Square.

I'm not some elitist and I believe in social responsibility for those that need help, but doing so in the heart of a major city is ridiculous.
