Fitness club enhancement fee??

Is it normal for a Fitness club to charge an enhancement fee?

What that means is, painting the facility, checker plate around the perimeter, new tanning bulbs, tire flip .

It is one time $20.00 fee, but I'm not sure If I agree with this as we have to pay to use the tanning bed.

This is at a Snap Fitness club.

While gym chains are notorious for bogus "initiation fees", this is the first time I've ever heard of "enhancement fee" charged after signing up. It doesn't sound like they value their clients' business.

I called other local chain fitness gyms in my area and they all start charging this fee, the most expensive one was Anytime Fitness they charge $18.00 in April and October. I guess Good life is charging as well. So I guess before signing up to a gym, find out what they charge for "enhancement fee" or "upgrade/improvement fee"

This has become common among "low cost" gyms that want to advertise a low monthly rate. Rather than be more honest and transparent by charging a monthly fee that is enough to support the gym (including maintenance and upgrades), they quote a ultra low monthly fee, and then ding you with an "enhancement fee".

They obviously can't charge you this fee if it is not in your contract. But for the gyms that advertise these low monthly rates, I'm sure it is buried in the fine print of your contract that they can charge you an enhancement fee. They of course never mention this fee when you sign up, but I'm sure it's in your contract.
