Man it must be awesome to have the filter accessble from the side. i still have to crawl underneath to get the filter. But i agree it much cleaner way of doing an oil change.
Do you dump the used oil in the sink? I wonder where we can drop off the used oil without getting charged?
If you are a lazybum abd you drive or know someone who owns an older VW like a Bug, Bus or a Vanagon...just dump the used oil underneath the car all over the street. Those VW pieces of crap leak so much oil noone will notice the difference...
Or if you are a "Nascar loving type of person" and drive an non-delicate diesel (ie 2005 smartcar no, 1987 f350 yes), just filter any used oil through an old pair of jeans and then simply add it to your tank cut with some normal diesel and burn it away as fuel. Smells great and the extra toxic fumes help keep your driveway and the public highways weed free.

I just got my Pela 6000 extractor from the previous deal yesterday. Went out this morning, sucked all the oil out easily.
Put in 4.7L of Amsoil 5w30 and a Wix filter. (Top load cartridge filter
)
Done in under 20 minutes and I just have to take the container down to Canadian Tire the next time I go there. Couldn't be easier and saved myself at least $25 vs an oil change place...
I am sure the extractor from Princess Auto will work just as well.

a. take it back at their location;
b. make arrangements with someone close by to take it back for them.
Both are free of charge since you already paid the environmental fee when you brought the oil.
If you think of the economics of changing the oil yourself, it's pretty good....
oil - 4.4 L of ESSO Protec at CT for $15.
filter - average price of $7
Total cost = $22 in raw materials + taxes and environmental fees. (could be cheaper if your car doesn't need 4.4L)
A Mr. Lube or a Jiffy Lube oil change- $35 to $45 depending on oil + taxes and environmental fees (up to 5L of oil).
If you use synthetic oils, the savings are actually greater since those Lube places generally charge a heavy mark-up for synthetic or specialty oils.
Local CT has special on, LOF, Tire Rotation, Brake inspection, Belt inspection, etc, for $19.99, plus of course, the $2 environmental fee... Other than having to wait for the vehicle, pretty sweet deal...
Just curious as well about these things as well, isn't part of the reason for an oil change to get the sludge out of the bottom of the pan? Does this remove this as well, or just take out the oil?

Just got back from picking up my extractor from Princess Auto in Coquitlam, BC (GVR). They have 6 more in stock. Looks like a great pump.
This is going to make my life a lot easier because the oil filter is top mounted on my Merc ML 320.

One main thing is that many oil change places do Not spend the sufficient time to let all of the oil drip out of the Oil Pan - mainly due to other customers waiting for an oil change. They rush it and guess what, the some old oil is still in the pan.
Do it yourself and suck as much out as possible - I would assume that the quality of the job would be way better. So it's not just the raw cost of the materials here.

If you want your car serviced by the trainee, go for the CT oil change special. Friend of mind work there and they love the oil change special. The price is really good, better than you do it yourself.

Drain oil into the pan is never a problem for me, if you have quick hand oil won't even get to your hand. The problem is always the filter, the left over oil always get all over the place.
This thing maybe good for my bimmer(top load) but pretty useless for my focus.

Not necessarily, I know a few guys at our local shop and have watched them do the oil change, they are fully licensed mechanics.

A trainee though has had more training and education about it, than a DIY'er! What's the difference, if you can actually have it done for less than the cost of supplies, not get dirty and go about the rest of your day while they do it?consumerPI wrote: ↑So price is good, but performed by a trainee = No thanks, unless you don't really care about your car.

There is very little to it -
Insert the rubber stopper end of the dipstick tube into the hole in the top of the extractor.
Insert the dipstick tube into the dipstick. Keep inserting the tube until it hits the bottom of the oil pan. How do you know? It has to go in at least as far as the dipstick itself.
Start pumping the pump. After two or three times, the oil should start flowing. Keep pumping for a total of 10 to 15 pumps. This will build a vacuum in the pump for the oil to keep flowing. You might have to pump it a few more times depending on how much oil you need to pump out.
As a quick test of the fluid extractor, try pumping some water out of a bucket.

In the reviews on Amazon.com one person said theirs leaked with synthetic oils. Anyone been using this or similar with synthetics having any problems?

I watched them do oil changes for mein the past and becaused they are rushed, they put the drain plug back while old oil is still dripping. Not detrimental, but I'd rather do it myself and thus do a better job of letting all of the oil drain and then flushing another litre through. Just a better job, that's all.
