Fonus - unlimited phone plan US$ 30

Fonus
Too good to be true ?

https://mobilesyrup.com/2019/11/21/worl ... -launches/
The global carrier is offering a plan that costs $30 USD (approximately $40 CAD) excluding taxes and fees. Customers have to pay $15 USD (approximately $20 CAD) for a SIM card, along with a $10 USD (about $13 CAD) international shipping charge.

...

The plan offers unlimited data, calls and texts. Fonus says it provides 5G speeds in 20 countries worldwide including the United States, United Kingdom, India, Germany and South Africa. “[In Canada] we’re still on LTE+ or LTE, so Fonus is going to run on LTE,” said Tian in an interview with MobileSyrup. Fonus says customers can also roam freely in 40 countries, including Australia, Canada, Brazil, Japan and the United States.
Edit: Added list of free "roaming" countries

*The 40 countries or territories where customers may roam without additional charges are: Albania, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Egypt, Faroe Islands, Fiji, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Northern Cyrpus, New Zealand, Pakistan, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, US Virgin Islands.

I loved it how there is almost no detailed information other than an amazing price and still gets down-voted at least once....

Thread Summary
Fonus is a SCAM

Call your credit card company and issue a chargeback right away.

https://old.reddit.com/r/Fonus/comments ... d_to_know/
The first thing you need to know is that if you ordered physical goods and they do not arrive within the timeframe promised (and if a tracking number was provided it doesn't show in transit) the merchant is required to refund you.

Based on Fonus promise of "order now and receive your sim within 30 days" anyone who ordered before Dec, 4 2019 should be eligible for a refund.

You should first contact the merchant via any mean that is provided in your order confirmation or their website contact section to request a refund.

You do not need to run after the business on social media or chat apps

If the merchant doesn't respond or denies you the refund you should contact your credit card company to file a chargeback or dispute.

You'll have to send them copies of your order details as well as the shipping time that was promised.

They will reach out to the merchant with an option to either accept the dispute or offer a rebuttal.

If the merchant offers a rebuttal you still have the right and chance to challenge it, don't be lazy pick up the phone and talk to a human being at the dispute department and explain your situation again.

You can also ask them to put the merchant on a three way line with you so that they can listen in on the conversation.

Founder Simon Tian was verified by Reddit and had an Ask Me Anything session @ https://www.reddit.com/r/Fonus/comments ... l_carrier/

Some noteworthy quotes:

"What's the catch"
No catch. I am showing the market what the real price for data is.
The Canadian cellular market is currently ruled by an oligarchic system.
"Whose network are you gonna use in canada? No information in your website"
Cannot disclose that unfortunately. NDAs.
"What's 'unlimited'? What's the speed after the limit?"
There's no throttling. If you utilize more data than other users then we simply funnel more data to your user pool.
"Is there a soft cap for data? Will data be throttled in any way shape or form?"
No. Data won't be throttled in any way shape or form.
No we don't throttle anywhere. If you walk into a 5G country (e.g. Australia), then it will be 5G. Here in Canada we have LTE+.
"Is there a reason why you didn't start off with eSIM capabilities?"
Most users in this world still use SIM cards.
eSIMs are too new and uncommon.
The fonus SIM card is a 3-in-1 SIM. Standard/Micro/Nano.
"Do you think it would be a good idea to accept PayPal considering that you're a new company that no one's heard of?"
I am good friends with Peter Thiel; the co-founder of PayPal.
Me & my team have analysed all the payment options.
"Does anyone know if you can port your canada mobile number to fonus"
We cannot confirm that word for word at the moment, but yes porting ability will be supported for Fonus customers worldwide.
"Very curious about "unlimited calls and texts" and if those will be to any country in the world. :)"
Yes, there will be no additional charges for international calls and texts.
"Can you speak to voicemail? Also, are you able to tether?"
Yes. Voicemail service is included. Mobile hotspot feature is also there.
"How about visual voicemail?"
No, it will be traditional voicemail service.
"It looks like you can cancel any time."
That is correct. You may cancel the $30/month plan at anytime.

I can't see a mention if you get a Canadian phone #.
If so, super hot.

edit: NM it's roaming in Canada, it's for sure a US #.
Still hot if you don't need to take calls I guess..

Wowzers, I wonder which company. Maybe Wind/Freedom? "Tian said that Fonus has an agreement with one of the Big Four in the U.S., which includes Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. The company is also partnered with a major provider in Europe, which could include Orange or Vodafone, as well as a carrier in Canada."

Small print:

They just started yesterday, but yeah, I'll wait a couple of months before joining up. I'm guessing there will be issues and maybe blackfriday deals..

I wonder what's the "unlimited" cap from which they start to throttle the bandwidth. You know, to serve us better.
Otherwise a good deal.

Sounds too good to be true, but I took one for the team and signed up anyway. Will update this thread when my sim arrives.

I wonder too... Unlimited is nice, but at what point do they slow/cap the speed?
And yes, what region is the phone # based? Hopefully Canada / local.

According to people on reddit

I just spoke to them on their chat and this is what they said:

You pick a number upon activation, or port your existing Canadian number to Fonus.

I just chatted with them on their website and they said you can port your Canadian number over or pick a new one on activation. I asked about the roaming partner in Canada and haven't gotten a response yet.

Edit: Carrier in Canada can't be revealed due to NDA, but confirmed it's one of the big 3 (obviously).

If they are billing in USD$, are they charging the usual Canadian taxes? HST, PST, Etc?

This sounds amazing, but I wouldn't risk porting my cell number to them. I dont think these kind of companies will last a long time.
