Free and low cost 2022 tax programs

Price:
$0 or $15
Retailer:
Various
Currently these are free ones I come across. Unlike UFile, TurboTax, etc. these ones do not have the maximum income restriction.
Simple Tax
https://simpletax.ca/

Genutax
https://genutax.ca/

Taxman
http://taxman.coolpage.biz/

Cloudtax
https://cloudtax.ca/

Other low fee options:
Advtax
https://www.aclasssoft.com/

Starting with the 2020 tax year, StudioTax charges $15 per license. Good for 20 returns according to the Q&A on their site: The 20 returns limit is a CRA requirement. If you are a tax preparer, then get an unlimited number of returns by using Studiotax Enterprise.
https://www.studiotax.com/home.html

TaxFreeway $9.95 for 20 returns

Genutax for me. My data stays on my shady computer instead of the cloud where someone else has the encryption key to your data. Also asks every question possible so I don't miss anything. It's idiot-proof, that's why I like it.

So you have to print it and send it by mail or you can netfile it?

Yes, overall it's still cheaper than $30 for TurboTax at Costco. And their support is superior. I don't mind to pay the annual fee.

Netfile, paper & mail is not idiot-proof, at least not for me.
I donate $10 bucks even though I'm not working lol. I want to keep these guys alive.

I tried StudioTax, it's better if you know what you're doing. Pure excel sheets, less clunky, you can drill in to what you want directly vs. answering tons of what feels like redundant questions (I have a lot of time on my hands as you can see from my post history). I usually used Studiotax to verify, but didn't last year. Studio Tax mobile may be free though?

Wealthsimple is my favorite and make it very easy to file return. And free too.

Not 100% correct.

From StudioTax website ...

We are still offering the software for free for users with total income(line 15000) less than 20K* and for our northern residents (NT, YT, NU). In this case you will not need a license or need to activate StudioTax 2021 in order to Netfile and print your returns.

You betcha!
I don't take chances with my small amount of money that no one would hack ever lol.

There were discussions on RFD about the privacy policy of SimpleTax long ago. They used to not hold the encryption key. They changed when Wealthsimple acquired them. But Wealthsimple's gotta make money somehow. I use them for other reasons.

To each their own. I'm not the only one that would prefer tax data stay in a AES-256 Veracrypt container on bare-metal...Just another option out there. I don't object to people using SimpleTax, you do you.

Sometimes simplicity overrides privacy. Personal value systems.

Yeah, ironically, I end up donating $10 to GenuTax anyway...Did you know people charge hundreds to do simple returns, outrageous...

Is StudioTax mobile still free? I remember an RFDer that just used that post-paywall.

CloudTax looks interesting. But not available to residents of Quebec or the Territories.

And if you have rental income, you have to use the paid service (one-time fee of $29.99, not payable each year I believe).
