Free VPNs

Free VPN services I've tried.
ProtonVPN: Extremely fast, unlimited free usage on free servers. But sometimes free servers are 100% utilized and unusable. Some functionality, such as disconnection protection are pro features.
Windscribe: Very slow[high ping and low bitrate(only getting 7mbps), can't find a lower ping than 77ms in Calgary], 10gb free cap [+20GB with code: PEACE]
VeePN: Only free in browser, no caps, no login, fast[150mbps] but high ping[77ms lowest to Calgary]
Hotspot Shield: Free no cap, no login needed, no auto-reconnect, limited to 5mbps but low 30ms ping.
HideMe: limited to 10gb, lowest ping [18ms] and moderately fast [60mbps]
Topcashback.com often offers 100% cashback on new VPN subscriptions with various providers. So I now use PIA VPN. Though there has been three others with 100% cashback in my email.

I tried some other ones, can't think of them right now though. Please leave your experiences etc.

If you use the browser plugin, don't sign in, it doesn't prompt you further.
On mobiile/desktop it immediately demands payment.

But I am getting much worse speeds today.
So like all these free services it depends on how many people are hitting the so few servers at once.
Another benefit of VeePN is Russian servers, which are far less likely to comply with data requests from your country.
We know Proton doesn't do logging and has privacy audits etc, but courts did force them to log traffic from certain source IP adresses.... So stick to "enemies".

If it is only for internet browsing, try using Brave Browser that has TOR Private Browsing

tor is as slow as 1000ms <1/mbps
Also 70% of nodes are owned by the FBI [and other government policing agencies], and it's FBI who seeks copyright infringement etc.

Or is that what they want you to think? ;-) TOR is still generally considered secure.*

Of your list only ProtonVPN and Windscribe (a Canadian company, btw!) are really top tier commercial VPN's.

When it comes to your privacy and security is free the best choice, though?

* "...news about malicious exits isn't that bad of a problem. Both the user and the server hoster can fix this issue. User should turn on EASE, server should force HTTPS. Server could also host an onion service to completely side-step this issue."

I just got an email saying Windscribe got acquired and are now BSVPN. Wonder if they will cancel all their lifetime accounts now? I haven't logged in to find out...

Could be an April fools gag, bsvpn could be short for bullish!tvpn. The email mentioned all old equipment such as Compaq servers (those were the days and I enjoyed those), 486 processors, etc..
