FUJIFILM announces X-Pro1 and X-E1 firmware updates to offer faster AF and the addition of a “Focus Peak Highlight” function

The upgrades will provide improved AF performance for all FUJINON XF lenses and, amongst other benefits, will add a ‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function for manual focusing.
25.06.2013

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) today announces the release of two new firmware updates for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 and X-E1 compact system cameras, one on 25thJune and a further one on 23rd July.
25th June firmware update:

FUJIFILM X-Pro1 Ver.2.05, FUJIFILM X-E1 Ver.1.06

Additional functionality to improve “one-handed” camera operation
A ‘Focus Frame Selection’ option has been added to the ‘Fn’ (function) button.
This offers easier/quicker operation when setting the Focus Frame Selection using only your right hand.
A second ‘Fn’ button can be allocated.
This enables you to allocate a function to the selector “down” button. The default setting is ‘Focus Frame Selection’ but this can be changed to whatever suits your shooting style.
Enable aperture control for lenses without aperture rings (XF27mmF2.8 / XC16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS).
If you are using either of these lenses which do not feature aperture ring, this firmware update allows you to adjust the aperture setting by using the command dial.

23rd July firmware update:

FUJIFILM X-Pro1 Ver.3.00, FUJIFILM X-E1 Ver.2.00

Improvement of AF speed. Improves AF speed on all existing XF lenses, thanks to the updated algorithm throughout the full range of focal length. Lenses covered:
XF14mm F2.8 R
XF18mmF2 R
XF35mmF1.4 R
XF60mmF2.4 R Macro
XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS

NOTES:
The AF Speed on the XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R MS OIS lens has been already optimized.
For all lenses other than the XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R MS OIS, the firmware for each lens must be also updated.
‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function for manual focusing
The ‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function, which features on the X100S and X20 cameras and was well accepted, has been added via this firmware update. It assists accurate and sensitive manual focusing by enhancing the outline of your subject in high contrast.
Improvement in ‘Checking Focus’ operation: how to change magnification ratio in manual focusing
The process to check focus by selecting a 3x or 10x manual focus magnification has improved. Just press and rotate the dial right or left and the camera will alternate magnification by 3x and then 10x , whichever way you turn it.

I like that they finally added face detection. That was the one thing that swayed me away from an x-e1. My wife takes a lot of the photos of our child, and she has no desire move focus points or learn photography, a decent auto mode is a must. I wish it came with the 18-55 even if it did cost a little more though.

Let's hope they don't use white pixels for peaking, like they did for the X100s.

How low can you go: rumors point to a new entry level Fuji X-A1 mirrorless camera

http://photorumors.com/2013/07/11/how-l ... ss-camera/

Fujirumors reports that there will be soon a new X-A1 camera featuring a non X-trans sensor. And to save costs the camera will not be for sale in small stores but only in large or online stores. That’s quite an interesting new approach.

Kaizen: more colours for Focus Peaking in future + Telephoto primes will come + 23mm in October

http://www.fujirumors.com/new-firmware- ... is-coming/

FIRMWARE

Download the firmware on July 23rd and you’ll get focus peaking… In future (not with this update) we can also expect different colours.
Fuji listened to us and is working on the long expected minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO, so there is hope it will come in future firmware updates!

LENSES

New tele photo primes will come.
The 23mm f/1.4 will be released in October, the 10-24mm in December and the 56mm f/1.2 in January 2014… ALL with aperture ring!

I just updated the following:

X-E1: 2.00
XF35: 3.00
XF18-55: 3.00

The AF is significantly improved, in particular, I'm not getting nearly as many red boxes in low light focusing. It locks correctly, and is much faster than before. The improvement is more noticeable for the XF35 than the XF18-55. The peak focusing is unfortunately only in white -- I'm still trying to get use to it.

This might be a game changer. For people who were leery of the X system due to AF issues, the focusing is actually quite acceptable now.
