Furnace and HW Tank Move

I was thinking about moving my furnace and hot water tank near the electrical panel to make one proper utility room during basement reno and save basement space. Is it advisable to move them next to the panel with appropriate separation/clearance requirements?

Hard to give an opinion without seeing the rest of the basement.
From what I see it would be a waste of money and would just box in the furnace/water heater as you have a floor drain there as well as another looks like sewer line and then the water meter. Do you have washer/dryer? You could make a set of doors for the electrical panel.

Get a licensed gas technician to see if it is possible ... get a quote to see how much.

HWT requires it to be close to a drain. Same with Furnace.

If there is no drain by your electrical panel (which normally speaking is the case) ... then you need a contractor to make a drain.

Also .. with the relocation of the furnace ... HVAC technician would be required to see how they can re-route the existing HVAC ducts as well as the gas line.

HWT relocation would entail relocation of the gas line as well as the water feeder line from the water meter. As water line would run along the joists ... being close to the electrical panel would probably NOT be a smart choice.

It's going to cost a LOT, and will reduce the performance of your ductwork, as it will be longer to the far edge.

No washer/dryer. Yea agreed, thinking about making a set of doors for the panel or some sort of enclosure to keep it as part of the "finished space" basement, therefore only needing 1 utility room for the furnace + HW tank

Good input. Thanks. Side question - if switching to tankless HWT I'm assuming it also needs a drain nearby?

Yes .... in case it leaks you want the drain closeby enough otherwise you may have a makeshift indoor pool.

Getting a new drain made ... digging into the flooring of the basement .... then locating the drain pipes to see how it flows ... its all about $$$$$$$$$

All the condensing units like high eff furnace or condensing tankless needs to drain ( but not necessarily needs a drain close by). Another cheaper option than putting a new drain is to connect a condensate pump which can be routed any where in the sink or other place.
