Garage organizers: recommended setup?

Gents,
We have a single small garage and we need to organize it better.

I was thinking of:
-Metallic shelves in the far end
-Wall mounted racks on both sides to hook tools up

For the shelves, I was thinking of getting those at Costco but have no clue what to do for the walls on either side.

Any recommendations and pictures of your setup?

i'm contemplating the exact same situation. I'm lucky enough to have relatively high garage ceilings since my house sits on a slight elevation. Therefore, I'm probably going to start by building a hanging garage shelf so I can put the larger seasonal items on top (such as a lawnmower, spreader, patio furniture, etc.). This will probably be the hardest part because I've never built anything floating off the ceiling and I always worry about how much weight it can support. However, I found this great video as a starting point. I will probably adjust my own hanging garage shelf slightly and reinforce it a bit more. I tend to overbuild things (better safe than sorry).

Underneath, I plan on building some floating shelves (about 1.5 foot wide) against the wall for smaller items such as windshield fluids bottles, weedbgone and any random items of that nature and width. Underneath that, the plan is to have on one side, a small worktable on wheels that I can move around (will probably have my mitre saw on it and all my garage tools). There'll also be enough space for portable table saw that I have. On the other side, I'll build something to store my winter tires. I don't trust them sitting on the hanging garage shelf, it would be a pain to grab them. The lower they are, the better. On the side of the garage, I'll have some hooks to store put my shovels, garden rakes, etc.

As for bicycles, I don't have any yet but when I get them, I will store them in my backyard shed but if I run out of room there too, I will probably built another hanging shelf ontop of the the garage door.

Sadly, I probably won't get to all of this until next year though.

I think Costco just finished a sale on the big garage metal racks. It was $50 off per rack ($150 sale price)

We went with the 4'x8' steel loft style rack from Safe Racks. It holds up to 600lbs.

We bought them from Urban Garage & had them installed by them just to make sure it doesn't come down on our heads.

Costco in the States sells the SafeRack while Costco Canada sells the same thing but it's made by a company called New Age. It's a great product as well.

It's pretty under utilized in this pictures.

"Up to 600lb", but you have at least 8 large tires on it(which I assume are for your F150 and SUV), those can be 70-80lb piece easily(truck rims are typically around 30-40lb, rubbers are around 40lb). I'd say you're actually pretty close to max capacity, if not over it.

i bet its the pic not the shelf.. those things hold a ton but cost alot.

If your even a bit handy you can make similar platforms from 2x4s and plywood for alot less.

My garage has a overhang storage made out of wood though. It's one of those bare garages. I will say, you can store alot of there. Highly recommend it if you can put one up. I also have those tire storage frames (triangle shaped) which helps alot too. Basically utilizing any shelving higher up is key for a smaller garage.

I don't keep truck tires or SUV tires up there...too heavy. If I remember correctly, those tires/rims were winter steelies/tires from previous cars that I hadn't sold yet. Had to climb a couple of steps up at 5ft ladder to get them stored/

As I mentioned above, the two vehicles in the photo I didn't have winters for when these pics were taken. Those size tires are just to heavy for me to lug up there....I'd put my back out.

I think the tires/rims in the pic are 16" & 17" winter packages with steelies & the other stuff up there was very light....the recycling box was empty.

The only caveat that the manufacturers of these steel lofts throw out is that the weight be evenly distributed.

I actually wanted to install it elsewhere in the garage but Urban Garage suggested that location because it afforded the best joist locations for the optimum hold for the lag bolts.

I've got Gladiator Gear Wall panels along one side of the garage, (12' wide x 2' tall, about 5' from the ceiling), and then a simple plastic, 5-rack from Costco years ago (Home Depot recently had the same rack in their stores two months ago). My seasonal tires sit off in a corner (no desire to hang them from the ceiling, and on their sides it will eat into space on the other wall). I've been debating on one of the Gearworks cabinets, as well as more panels to finish off the appearance of the other walls.

Garage is a single (10' x 20').

Slatwall. I have my entire garage wall to wall, ceiling to floor, covered in slatwall I purchased from Kijiji. Your options are limitless. Different hooks, shelves, etc. Can be moved around at will. I paid $30 a sheet for the higher quality laminate with aluminum reinforced slats. They come up regularly on Kijiji...store closings, etc. Would do it again in a heart beat.
