Just got an email with an interesting new pre-sale that GB has on the go right now, for an updated version of the MeeGoPad HDMI PC stick - the T02 version. They have the Ubuntu version available for $79US with coupon code GBT02, or the Win8.1 version available for $99US with coupon code GBMT02. Standard ******** free shipping here, and depending on your credit card it looks like it's still a better option to pay directly in USD instead of letting them charge you in CAD (their USD->CAD exchange rate is 1.2524 right now).

Specs are the same for both boxes, the only difference is the os included. This is the first one of these I've seen that's come directly with Ubuntu, which is kind of intriguing to me personally, but YMMV I guess. Here's the listed specs:

- Micro SD(TF)card, max 64G. support external USB device
- Support Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0
- GPU: Intel HD Graphic
- CPU processor type: Bay Trail-T Quad Core (4C/4T) SoC 2W
- Communication port wireless Lan: 802.11b/g/n
- Memory technology: DDR3L-1333
- RAM: 2GB (For Z3735F 64bit)
- Flash Memory: 32GB
- Power AC adapter: AC 100 to 240V, 50/60Hz, 5V/2A
- Dimensions: 11 x 4.3 x 0.99 cm / 4.32 x 1.69 x 0.39 inches
- Package Contents: 1 x TV Dongle, 1 x USB Cable, 1 x Power Adapter, 1 x English Manual

From the photos it looks like there's 2 normal sized USB 2.0 slots, micro sd slot, and one other port that I can't quite make out at the moment. Doesn't come with a remote, and that's certainly a pain in the butt, but I would imagine any cheapo bluetooth remote would work with it if you already have one, and of course keyboard/mouse solutions are available as well.

This seems pretty damn cool.
Aim to be a better man than you were, rather than best those around you.

That's the way things roll with these Chinese companies. You never know how quick a sequel device will come out. :p

I wonder how the thermals on this are. I read reviews that the Compute Stick didn't fare that well in that area.

Well, one of the features is "Internal electronic components through better test and adopted the latest capacitance design". So... Take from that what you will? :P

But yeah, I feel like a lot of these types of devices previously had overheating issues, so hopefully they've worked on that with the new one.

It's silly that the windows version costs more because microsoft doesn't charge them anything for the license since the machine retails for less than $250.

Actually, the free version of Windows (Windows 8.1 with Bing) is only supposed to be installed on devices with screens. It's free for devices with 9" or smaller screens, and $15 for 10" or bigger. So... I'm not actually sure *what* version is coming on the Windows version of the stick.

Actually they can. The Windows 8.1 with Bing SKU is $25 USD, with a $25 credit for <9" tablets and $15 credit for >10".

Intel Compute Stick and HP Stream Mini uses the same license. I can't imagine at those prices they are selling, to come with a full Windows 8.1 Core license.

argh... just received the Meegopad T01 for US$99 last week... should've waited for the T02... although it doesn't seem different from the T02 except for the casing which is practically a clone of the Intel Stick... Throttles like heck as it doesn't really have good heatsinks... they should've made the case aluminum or something (which would probably make the wifi suck)... I'm going to punch a hole in the case and add a bigger heatsink as it really becomes hot after an hour of use...

it came with windows 8.1 trial so I had to reformat and install Win 8.1 Pro (which I had extra licenses)...

They also have more margins they have to maintain... Intel and HP probably expects at least 40% margins on there products while Meego's probably okay with 4%.

No mention of it, so I doubt it.

As an aside, it *does* seem that they are shipping this with a with valid Windows 8.1 with Bing licence (as opposed to the previous version that shipped with a Windows 8.1 trial only)
