GCSurplus of Public Services and Procurement Canada

Not sure if this is the correct thread. Mods please move if needed.

Sells a wide selection of Government surplus assets to the general public. Register, log in, and bid on a variety of items such as office equipment, hand tools, cars, boats, and airplanes.

So what this is a PSA ?

Lots of folks already know this

And it’s not just surplus …
The Govt also auctions off confiscated items

Esp items seized by Customs
Hence the household goods & lux items
Appliances, TVs, Jewellery,
planes, boats, RVs etc

* EDIT / ADD … lol took a look at the link & current offerings
This is a pretty pathetic lot
Times are slow no doubt cuz of Covid

Yesterday, CTV News ran a story about it, worthy of an intervention from Captain Obvious himself.

Many local governments and broader public sector organizations auction off surplus stuff through www.govdeals.ca -- hell, the University of Waterloo has been running surplus sales for decades.

Yawn. Nothing new, here.

Didn’t see the dresses & shoes when I first looked

But no … the Govt didn’t buy them

It can be items SEIZED by the Govt
(See my Reply # 5 )

Need to read the header at the top of this pg for explanation = https://www.gcsurplus.ca/mn-eng.cfm?snc=wws

So as an example … c/o CBSA / Canada Customs (smuggled goods)
Or items otherwise confiscated by the Govt (like RCMP, Revenue Canada, etc) due to ill gotten gains / criminal activity

This site has been around for years. Hit or miss, sometimes there's some odd stuff listed.

In the old days I'd frequent the Gov't auctions, but alot of it was just old surplus stuff from various departments.

Online could be a bunch of junk, crown assets or who knows what. I've seen brand new vehicles, boats and planes, or just boring offfice supplies.

Our tax dollars didn't buy them , but a good reason to get all haughty about anyway. Never miss an opportunity to be outraged about the way tax dollars are spent.

In 2018 we had that G7 summit.

To make a long story short, the government spent $23M on 600 vehicles for support, ferrying people around etc. The details aren't important.
Anyways... GCSurplus had a bunch of Police model Dodge Challengers and a couple of upfitted Suburbans for support.
This isn't really news as police vehicles come and go on GCSurplus all the time.
What IS news is that these vehicles had hundreds of kilometers. Not hundreds of thousands but hundreds. They were brand new, used for a week.

I have a weird obsession with police vehicles.
It took literally everything in me to not hit that bid button on a police edition Challenger.

While I'm not sure how much they actually recouped at the end of the day, the government spent $23M on 600 vehicles.
The articles I've read said that they recouped $6.3 million over 167 vehicles.

They said it'd be cheaper to buy and then resell over renting.
While I have no idea what the government pays for a rental vehicle (probably not much) this kinda seems sus.
Scaling the above, that's $4M to rent 600 vehicles for a week?

Rental rates are insane right now. I tried renting a car in Toronto and it's like $1200/week.
For those of you too lazy to do math, the above works out to about $6600/week. Even if the government managed to get more for the vehicles, a government contract probably doesn't pay full retail.

Today's rental prices are caused by a car shortage and a pandemic. 2018 was a "normal" day so a week was more like a few hundred.
Do you not have anything else to do rather than argue with strangers on the internet
Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.
