getting AHCI working on ASUS P5Q Pro

okay ordered a ASUS P5Q Pro want to know best way to get ahci driver slipstreamed on a xp pro sp3 cd.

I'm getting conflicting info while searching, some say use the just the AHCI driver, but say if I hook up a sata dvd-rw drive it won't work.

Some say using the RAID drivers, which supports AHCI by default will make the SATA dvd-rws work fine.

which one is right?

also what driver version to use? there are so many!

Why are you mentioning the DVD drive? Will you be using it to install XP?
The motherboard should see the DVD drive and be able to install XP with it.
However, you should have a slipstreamed XP cd in order to see your Hard Drive.
The P5Q has an intel ICH10R controller, so your driver is here. Look under Sata, the driver's name is:
ICH10R AHCI/RAID Driver Disk for Windows XP/Vista & 64bit XP/Vista.

Also, the P5Q has two types of Sata ports. The orange and white ports are for Drive Xpert (Marvell driver). The other six red ones are for Intel raid (Intel AHCI driver)
Make sure you plug your drives into the red ports, unless you want advanced raid features like mirroring.

I am mentioning the dvd cause of this post:

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id= ... uage=en-us

worried about that...

okay, I want to slipstream that ICH10R AHCI/RAID drive and should I slipstream any other drivers while i'm at it?

also they are a bunch of choices when I try to slipstream, I don't know what one to pick.

I have a IDE dvd drive too, so maybe installing from that is better, and install the sata dvd drive after install?

You only need the sata drivers slipstreamed. You can install the other drivers once XP is installed.
Try out both drives, see what works.

okay thanks but what drive?

there are tonnes of choices.

I assume I would pick iaHCI, instead of iStore.

but when I pick that, I get tonnes of driver choices to slipstream,

is the one I have highlighted the correct one to slipstream?

hmm but that is for RAID... would I need to setup RAID mode in bios or AHCI mode?

I won't be using a RAID.

oh wait, nvm. I didn't see the ich10r ahci on the top. Select that.

thanks, just noticed that myself too.

So AHCI mode in bios then?

great thanks.

maybe i'll slipstream both regular AHCI and RAId drivers incase the plain AHCI mode doesn't work.

When you load the O/S make sure that the BIOS is set to AHCI &/or RAID. If you are using XP, you have to slipstream the drivers or load using the F6/floppy process.

When I was doing my latest build with a P45 I was so concerned with getting my SCSI drivers working that I forgot about this and set up everything with IDE. Now I can't hotswap my eSATA drive using the motherboard connector (but fortunately I have a seperate eSATA card that I can use).

yeah thanks.

I'm going to update bios to latest first, set bios to AHCI, since I won't be using RAID, unless it doesn't work in plain AHCI mode. Then I will need to use a drivers floppy for raid or another slipstream. (only did AHCI drivers, incase slipstreaming them both at the same time would cause a conflict)

there are tonnes of choices.

I just click on all that have AHCI, so I can use the same Windows CD with other computers. Windows will know which is the one to actually install.

This is very easy to 'correct'.
- Get the appropriate Intel AHCI drivers ready
- Connect your boot drive (assuming it is an SATA HDD) to the add-on card
- Restart, go into the BIOS, and change it to AHCI mode
- Continue booting into Windows, and once Windows loads, it will detect new hardware
- Browse over to where you saved the Intel AHCI drivers and let Windows install
- Once done, power down, and reconnect your boot HDD back to the Intel SATA controller
- Reboot Windows and enjoy running in AHCI mode

edit// When you go into the BIOS to change to SATA, don't forget to change it so that it boots from the add-on card.
