Getting QC Plan and Number on Koodo in Toronto

Is there any way for a Toronto Koodo dealer to activate me on a BYOP QC plan here in Toronto with a Toronto billing address? The reason I asked is that on the terms, Koodo said that their QC plan is only available to Quebec residents. I am not trying to port an Ontario number in the future, so a 514 suits me just fine. However, without a Quebec billing address, would they give it to me? If a Toronto dealer here would not do it, can I just make a trip to Montreal and do it there? Thank you

1. Get a Toronto number with a ON plan on a Toronto address (take license at your address proof).

2. Go home, change to a 514 number (or might have to get 438 number which is Montreal as well).

3. After first billing cycle ends (5-9 days), change your plan to QC plan. Done. No need to change address.

And no, most Koodo dealers won't give you a QC number. But good thing is you can do it yourself on Koodo self serve.

BestBuy will activate a QC number for you.

But since you're going BYOD, it doesn't really matter. Since you can:
  1. Activate with a local number at any dealer. Go on cheapest plan unless there's a promo you want on a bigger plan (overseas calling allowance, bonus data allowance) in order for it to carry over to the equivalent QC plan
  2. Hop online (doesn't have to be at home, can even be in the dealer store using their wifi), switch to a QC number
  3. Change the plan right away (max once per billing cycle, can be done before your first bill)
  4. Port in your GTA number after the fact and keep the QC plan

Have an ON number and want to hop onto the Koodo qc train. If I want to get a new phone, should I follow the same steps?

1. Sign up for a local ON number and large tab for new phone.
2. Change to qc no. through self serve
3. Change to qc plan, then port on number.

Since I am getting a new phone in store, would there be any issues?
Thank my post if it helped!

What Bestbuy stores in the GTA will activate a QC number? I was in Ottawa earlier this week and happen to be walking by a Koodo kiosk. Just for fun, I asked the agent if he will activate a QC number for me. He said sure, show me photo ID with a QC address. I bet I was probably the 10000th person who has ever asked him.

Koodo stores and most dealers in Ontario will require proof of address in QC to activate a QC number, with the exception of BestBuy. Walmart might do it, but BestBuy so far does it without question. Koodo's new activations network even blocks porting in "out of province" numbers, but they'll let you do it after the fact in the web portal. The system does allow assigning out of province numbers, just no dice for porting one over.

Had you crossed over to Gatineau, QC, you could have activated a QC number despite using your Ontario billing address at any Koodo store. Sadly, Gatineau doesn't have any Wow or TMS locations.

A colleague of mine used his passport instead of the drivers license to sign up for the QC plan and it worked.

In other words, easiest path is to get a plan at Bestbuy with a QC number, go home and switch to QC plan, port in Ontario phone number, enjoy the savings.

BestBuy can even put you on a QC plan right away. Only step would be to port in the ON number after the activation in self-serve.

They are actually that accommodating! This is at any Bestbuy store in the GTA?

Nothing about being accomodating. If they give you a QC number, they have to give you a QC plan because any other plan won't show up.

My understanding is yes. I believe one user on RFD has done this in the GTA and reported back (can't find the post). It's always a YMMV, but until the rules change, BestBuy isn't afraid of clawbacks on out of province activations.

Not entirely true. This has been true for Koodo, but I think that's changed. Last time I got a fresh QC number activated on Koodo, I did have access to QC+Rest of Canada plans. So I think they could in theory activate a QC number, then put you on a Rest of Canada plan. Doesn't matter though, they will have no trouble selecting a QC number upon activation.

After you port your number over to the QC plan can you upgrade to get a new handset VIA web portal?

Best Buy in Ancaster wouldn’t give me a QC number. Dude started the process, and I told him I was fine with an Ontario plan, but just needed the QC number. Midway through the setup, he had to ask his manager something, and manager said without a Quebec ID, they wouldn’t give me a QC number.

I’ll have to try a different mobile place I guess, but I was quite discouraged, as this thread led me to believe that Best Buy was a slam dunk.

Looks like in GTA, it's a huge YMMV. In Ottawa, both BestBuy and Wal-Mart still hand out QC #'s on Koodo like a hot burger on a bun. My buddy (who reads RFD forum) got a Galaxy S7 at Walmart and wanted to do a day 2 cancellation, they still gave him (with Ontario ID) a QC # with the device on tab medium. Now he's trying to switch to an AB # to drop the sales tax on his buy-out.

They usually give out QC numbers on new activation's in Ottawa because it's closer to Montreal and they suspect you actually live there.

On the Koodo website, it says that the 2GB bonus data is going to expire today, Nov 27. How fast can I change the ON number to a QC number and select the QC 5+1+2 GB plan? Will it take more than a day, planning to get the line setup right now. TIA

I think you're beat, unless you can get QC# and plan in store TODAY. I just started this process last Thursday (Galaxy S8 $0 down LG tab) and can't change my plan until Wednesday of this week.
