Thread Summary
Here’s how you can receive the discount:

  • - If your local transit agency uses PRESTO*, the discount will be applied automatically when you tap between GO Transit and local transit. (*Brampton Transit, Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, Oakville Transit, and York Region Transit also accept a valid GO single-ride paper ticket or day pass ticket as proof of GO fare payment.)
  • - If your local transit agency DOES NOT use PRESTO, you can show your PRESTO card as proof of a valid GO Transit fare on local transit. A valid, GO single-ride paper ticket or day pass ticket will also be considered proof of GO fare payment on local transit.

Associate Transportation Minister Stan Cho says discussions with the Toronto Transit Commission are ongoing.

from https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2022/0 ... e-ttc.html
Cho didn’t rule out extending the new discount to the TTC, which is by far the largest local transit agency in the region, at some point in the future.

“A project of this size and the changes we’re making do take a little bit of time, so the discussions with the TTC will be ongoing. The ultimate goal is to make sure we connect the entire grid,” he said.

That would be nice for commuters who don't work near Union Station in Tronno.

The 'ongoing' communication between ttc and yrt had been a few years until it was officially disconinued. I would never hold hope of anything being announced as ongoing from ttc.

Your local transit fare will be completely FREE if you’re travelling to or from GO Transit and the local transit agencies.

Here’s how you can receive the discount:

  • If your local transit agency uses PRESTO*, the discount will be applied automatically when you tap between GO Transit and local transit. (*Brampton Transit, Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, Oakville Transit, and York Region Transit also accept a valid GO single-ride paper ticket or day pass ticket as proof of GO fare payment.)

No. It's the other way around. Local is free. You still have to pay overpriced GO.
BTW, some local transit already sort of had this arrangement with GO even way before COVID. I think I used to pay $0.80 to Durham transit.

It's $0.65 here in Hamilton. The bigger savings for me is that student fares on Go will now be 40% off.

"You have a 3-hour travel window to complete your GO trip. Transfer credits will be automatically applied when transferring between GO Buses, GO Buses to GO Trains, or GO Trains to GO Buses. Remember, transfers between GO Transit and other participating systems must also occur within 3 hours of the start of your GO trip."

This seems like a bad time to be doing this as all transit seems to be hurting from covid. Further slashing their fare revenue means that the money is going to come from somewhere.

Richmond Hill
As a student, especially after the March 13th discount, GO bus price can easily be less than local transit. How will that work out?

For example, GO bus from Richmond Hill Centre Terminal to YorkU is $2.94. The price for YRT is $3.88.

If one takes this route, I wonder if the final charge will be $2.94 or $3.88.

Bingo! That somewhere means your pocket.

But this isn't really intended to make transit more afFordable. It's intended to make a Ford more palatable to the electorate in the upcoming election.

Metrolinx is an arm's length agency, they work outside the political side.

Edit apparently not. My bad.

I don't think there's anything particularly unique about this, as a Scarborough family moved out to Ajax and has to commute into Toronto.
But the lack of sharing between agencies is annoying.

Here's an example of a trip home, from downtown Toronto to GO, to a Durham transit bus home

As you can see, TTC is a full fare, while Durham offers a discount
