Going to Mexico and planning on swapping SIM cards questions.......

Anything that we should be aware of?

Figure that with the swap we’ll end up with a Mexican phone number, but all the data and contacts in the phone should be untouched. Coming back, we’ll swap the CDN sim back in.

Have you done this before? Am I missing something?

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten....

This article lays it out - they are very easy to purchase. I've done it the past two times I went to PVR. I think WhatsApp asks if you want to keep your existing (Canadian number) which you do. If you are an iPhone user, your Mexico number will show up on the receivers end, but just tell them who you are.

Overall much much cheaper than roaming.

It's just as easy as that. Swap out the sim, and you're good to go.
Provided your phone is unlocked, which would be if it was released in 2018(?) or newer.

I have seen some older models wipe themselves the first time a new sim goes in it.
I believe that was some older samsung models, but i never had that happen myself with any of mine, happened to a friend a few times though.
Highly doubt you'd have to worry about it.

I've done it before. I buy a sim card on ebay for telcel and then use the mi amigo plan which gives you unlimited calling / text and varying amounts of data depending on what you load it up with. Very cheap, it's like only a couple of dollars for all you'd need really.

For iphone, uncheck your cdn phone number from both imessage and facetime settings before you leave canada ( Both can use your email address instead)

Works like a charm. Usually a cell store right at the airport. 50pesos for a week of data and calls.

Advantage of the ebay approach is you can test it here. It includes free roaming in the US and Canada.
