good camera phone for ~$500 or less

So my Nexus 5x died, the infamous bootloop. I'll be sending it back, but the whole process is probably going to take a month and I can't go for a month without a phone. I also have a nexus 5 in the house that could use upgrading.

I'm looking for:
- an excellent camera, at least as good as the 5x. This is very important to me.
- fully unlocked.
- no dealing with carriers. I'm happy with my $15/month plan, and I don't want to jump through hoops to buy my phone.
- new, as in not refurbished or used.

I don't care about many other features. My photos sync to my fileserver whenever the phone is in wifi range, so I don't need tons of storage. I don't install apps: I pretty much only use email, browser, and sms.

So far my best candidate is a new samsung galaxy s7 for $600 CAD, new, from swiftvox. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

What app/setup are you using to do this? i just recently got an android phone with a half decent camera and am looking for a wifi photo sync option.

I use a program called resilio sync, which works quite well so far.
