Only if it's free. Fortec is no longer supported, good only for true free to air.

People are loading them with specially converted Pansat 2700 bins. There's only a few true hobbyist that produce these converted bins. If they ever decide to stop, you'll be SOL.

viewset ultra is the best out right now.
Was up and running for about 4 months straight no interuption.
For December there was some major glitches but now new Bin is
working perfect.

With the ultra you can download the BIN via USB stick so it is very easy.

A used Fortec is not worth $50. Brand new, 3-4 years ago they were $99. Maybe $5 tops.

The CaptiveWorks 600P is a decent real cheap receiver.

Stay away from Coolsat right now due to support issues.

Viewsat don't have as nice a picture, but at least the support is good. I think the VS2000 xtreme is decent for $123.

Try Liata in Mississauga:
http://www.liata.com/scrMain2.asp?product_types_id=56
CaptiveWork 600 FTA Satellite Receiver $ 78.00
Coolsat 6100 Private FTA Satellite Receiver $ 148.00
Coolsat 7000 Micro-PVR FTA Satellite Receiver $ 169.00
Coolsat 8100HD MiCro PVR & FTA Satellite Receiver $ 405.00
Pansat 9000HD FTA Satellite Receiver $ 388.00
Viewsat VS 2000 Xtreme Satellite Receiver (OEM) $ 123.99
Viewsat Ultra Satellite Receiver w/USB $ 159.00
Viewsat 9000HD HDTV Satellite Receiver $ 398.00
VIEWSAT VS PRO Free To Air Receiver w/PVR $ 179.00

FTA alley is good - on the north side of Matheson, just west of Dixie in Mississauga. There's 4 stores there that are almost beside each other - AA, RCI, Bali and also Incredible/Ariza just around the corner.

wow so the $80 captive compares to the viewsat ultra? and better picture quality?

From what I have seen, Viewsat probably has the worst picture quality of all FTA receivers. The picture is noticeably blurry on even a 26" TV compared to say a Coolsat which is much sharper.

The CW600P has a decent a) picture b) support and c) cost. The only problem is that it's a little long on tooth (i.e. no USB). It's competitors would have been the Coolsat 6000 and the Viewsat VS200 extreme. The USB version would be the CW800.

I have one as well. It's been on every the fta message board since Nov 23. Norwest wanted to stop all support for the Coolsat 4000, 5000 and 6000 models and force all old customers to upgrade to new receivers because of the clone situation. It was only after a huge outcry from outraged customers that they decided to release a fix almost 7 days after everyone else had theirs out. Even homemade FLU/ Pansat 2500 fixes were coming out faster.

Since Nov 23, the number of bins that came out for various receivers:
CW600P = 9 bins
Coolsat 6100 = 7 bins
Coolsat 5000 = 4 bins
VS2000EX = 12 bins
SV1000 = 12 bins
Fortec FLU/Pansat 2500 = 10 bins - homemade from Pansat 2700 bins

Note even the current model Coolsat 6100 has had 7 bins out while the Coolsat 5000 has had only 4 bins.

Do you really want to buy a receiver from a company with that kind of business model? What if you buy a Coolsat 6100 and they decide to stop support 6 months later like they did to Coolsat 6000 customers?

"From Nov 23:topcat......Now to answer your question. the 4000,5000 and 6000 receivers will Most likely NOT be updated after the last 155 release ! Coolsat has taken a stance against Clones and seem to careless about their supporters that bought the Real Coolsats ! I think their style of Business STINKS and would advise Checking out Other receivers ! Some like NFusion have Top Rank Support !!...."

Looks really good to me to... just as clear as regular cable.
Never had a problem with picture quality.

Only problem I have ever had is with the menu being half hour slow. Even after time and location update.
Really not a big deal tho as they now have a program time elapsed bar for the new bin.

You're not using the coaxial cable, are you?

Using the Component output with the 3 YPbPr wires and it looks fine on a 52"..
