Good Price for Sony A7 - USD$800

I was looking at getting a Sony A7 to upgrade from my A77... Canadian sites have it for almost $1400 CAD. Then, for giggles, I searched USA Best Buy and found the camera for $1000 CAD ($799.99 USD)

Its a big difference, now I am wondering why the price gap and do canadian prices drop to that level for that camera? I search multiple times and haven't come up with anything. Wondering if anyone can chime in here.

the original vanilla a7 is coming up on 5 years
if you're upgrading i would at least go for the more capable mark II
you're prob already aware that FE lenses are $$$...so if you're gonna adapt, do your research.

Wait till Monday, as Sony might announce the A7III, which might see price drops across the board again.

OP, I guess for the price you mentioned, it included the kit lens right? If not, as of right now, $1400 will get you the A7II body only or $1200 for the A7.

Also to answer your question, it is usually the case with many cameras, in the US, the price will always be cheaper, but only if you go get it in person. I.E.: if you buy stuff at B&H online, chances are it'll come out the same price after the taxes or more if we have sales here too.

and as rebel mentioned, I'll wait until Monday and see if the rumours are true. If Sony will annonce the A7 III and use the new Z battery, it'll be a nice upgrade already and if they upgrade that old sensor & autofocus from the A7 & A7II, that'll become an amazing entry lvl FF camera if the price can stay around $2000.

I’ve been meaning to pick up an a7ii for a while now with the kit lens - I love paying around with one at my local Best Buy (until one of those salespeople start to harass me).

I might have to consider buying the a7ii. FYI there seems to be a price drop from the manufacturers side - comes up to about $1,800 shipped with the kit lens from all retailers (Henry’s, CameraCanada, Best Buy, Vistek, etc.)

That's because Sony is trying to clear stock.

Monday will be interesting if they announce the new A7III.

They have to price it lower than the A7R2 since that seems to be sticking around for awhile.

The price is for body only.

A lot of reviews only say to get the A7 vs the ii because bang for buck it's better. But, admittedly, I want that evf on the ii

Didn't know about the iii ... Certainly I'll wait for that amouncment, see then what the Mk ii drops to.

I've owned the A7, A7ii, and now the A7rii. I never noticed a difference between the A7, and A7ii EVF. To my knowledge, it should be the same. Now if we are comparing the EVF in the A7Rii, now that's a noticeable difference.

I would recommend getting the A7ii over the original A7. The A7 just feel awkward in your hands. The redesign of the body in the A7ii makes it feel much more comfortable in the hand. Especially if you consider the shutter button placement. Also if you shoot at night, look up "sensor reflections" with the original A7. While image quality is pretty much the same with the exception of sensor reflections. The A7ii is much better ergonomically. Even the sd goes in the wrong way imo, in the original A7. The A7ii also has slightly better AF. Imo, the only thing better about the original A7 is the weight. You do save a bit of weight, but not much.

But yeah the A7iii should be announced Monday as mentioned above. If you don't mind buying used you could save some money. I sold my A7ii about 2 months ago for $1250 on kijiji.

In this case, the difference isn't that much. At BH right now, it's 798 USD body only, free shipping to Canada and with the pre paid duties, taxes and brokerage, the grand total is est. CAD $1,163.17 shipped to QC (might be a bit more because credit card charge a little for the conversion). If I buy it at Henry's right now, it'll cost me $1260 total. It's less than $100 with no Canadian warranty.

Or you get can it used for around $900-1000. I won't mind getting the A7 as a B camera, but if it's your main, you should get at least the A7II, it's only $200 more right now. If you have the budget, wait for the A7III until Monday I heard it should cost around $2000-2300. After Monday, consider the A7II if you need a camera right now, while it's on sale. Anyone remember the successor of the A6000? it never came and every few weeks, there's a rumor about it and it's being 4 years that the rumors started. I consider A6300 and A6500 another line-up to the A6000, not a direct successor. That A7III rumor is being around for at least 2 years now, each time stating it's about to come out.

Have you looked into the A7R3? It's a monster of a camera and worth that price.

Thanks for the feedback... we will see what happens today, if the A7ii drops in price, I will definitely jump on that one.

I really though they changed the EVF on the ii, i was mistaken though. Im stretching my budget as is with the A7 i or ii, A7R is WAYYY out there

I use an A77 (A-Mount), so all my lenses (1 G and 2 Zeiss) are good to go with the sony adapter.

A77 is 7 year old A-mount camera, A7 is E-mount and a 5 year old E-mount camera that was never rated well to begin with.

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-alpha-a7/19

I would highly advise against making this change, especially if you have Zeiss glass which uses screw mount AF. The adapter works poorly with the Zeiss lens, and the original first E-mounts (A7 and A7R) have issues.

I'm an Alpha user, went from A850 to the A99II and stuck to A mount, despite heavily considering getting the A7RII after some heavy research. Native lens are always better. I own the Zeiss 24 mm F2, 85mm F1.4, 135mm F1.8

Get an A99 for cheap if you want to make the jump to full frame on a budget without the setbacks of getting an adapter (which will get your price up there). I could see switching to a new E-mount camera, but not the near lateral move you are doing with all the setbacks of switching mounts + adapters

I was hoping for it to be a little bit less expensive. It's almost double the price of the A7II on sale.

I can't wait for DXOmark to score the sensor. It'll be interesting to see how it compares to the A7RII since you can buy one new close to $2600

Also, the battery life drops to 610 if one will only use EVF + it still has the same old EVF resolution

^2K is a very fair price for a stabilized 4K FF (supposedly the a9 sensor) that has modern connectivity (USB-C), dual card slots, and supposedly decent battery
try finding 4K canikon anywhere near that, nope
this will also challenge the high-end crops like GH5 and XPro2...seems to be a superb all-rounder...it will sell like mad and dare I say it I'm even inclined to think the a7ii at $900 less is actually the lesser deal
