Good time to lock in a GIC?

Hello. CIBC has offered me a 1 year GIC, non-redeemable, fixed rate of 2.5%. I am eager to go ahead with this deal, especially after the horribly low rates the last few years.

However, this deal was offered just before the April 13th interest rate hike. I asked my bank if I should expect a better deal (due to the hike) in the next few days/weeks but they could not confirm.

Should I wait a bit longer in case a better offer comes?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Isn't there a plain old deposit account from someone at that rate recently. Think I saw it yesterday or day before here.

Rates going up steady.

I am waiting for the next two BOC rate hikes in June and July also predicted to be .5 increases. Then going short term unless the 5 year rate at least matches inflation.

Oaken Financial offers the best 1 year rate at 2.8% and 2 year at 3.45% . Personally , I would not get any GIC longer than 2 years at the moment as rates are targeted to rise another 1.75% over the next 12 months. You could be looking at 5% return on a 2 year or higher GIC by end of 2022. A modified GIC ladderis the best approach, splitting into 5 to cover 3m, 6m, 12m, 18m and 24 months. Otherwise, invest in XDIV.TO and get 4% in dividends.

Based on the uncertainty with the current situation on inflation. We are not even sure what the peak is given that it's still rising.

Thats just silly. The central banks are now finally trying to fight it so it has definitely peaked.

How soon GIC rate will reflect interest rate hike? Like Fed will increase rate next month, will GIC increase 50bps right away?
