This doesn't fit in Hot Deals since the price is not an ATL and there is no price drop or discount, but the value for money proposition is very strong here so this laptop deserves a thread on RFD.

I am typing from an Acer laptop. My previous Acer laptop that is ~ 7.5 years old now is still working well. Its build quality is also fine. Yes, Acer is not the greatest and the Aspire 5 series is definitely the budget model series, but it is not to be dismissed as "e-waste".

I was looking for decent performance laptops for programming, and I came across this as well...would this be good for Unity/Visual Studio work?

For that task, you will want/need more RAM and storage. The CPU can get that job done but if your projects are big, you may want a faster CPU as well. It will be worthwhile for you to look for a higher specced laptop since that will save you the time of looking for RAM and storage and doing the upgrades, and you may get better value as well. On the other hand, if the budget does not permit additional spend now, it is possible to get started with this and then upgrade later. RAM will be a serious constraint however.

Do you think this is good then?

FunnyGamer wrote: Yes, that will work well. If you don't need the touchscreen and are looking to save some money, check out this thread: dell-dell-15-4500u-4700u-usb-c-dp-4k60- ... 0-2387232/

If you do go with the Dell, select the 16 GB RAM option during purchase.
Here's another good option: hp-hp-14-inch-laptop-ryzen-5-5500u-8gb- ... 0-2479895/
You will want to upgrade the RAM in this one, though. If you don't want to do it yourself, you can take it to a repair shop. Some of them will do it for a fairly modest price since it is generally easy and doesn't take much time. Just call a few and shop around.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I also saw the new Dell Insiron 15 with 16gb ram, 1tb ssd and a newer ryzen, for around $900 so seems to be a better investment actually!
