German and Italian aren't terribly useful. Pass.

(I'm old you see, and my time is limited. If you're young knock yourself out.) :)

For me, I could talk to my Aunt who was a teacher of German at Queens University. I could converse with her in her native language. Maybe...

No. Perhaps it's the accent from my relatives but many words with a "w" sound like a "v" as a for instance. Also the same as I remember my teacher's pronounciation from my old HS days of 50 years ago.

What is your advice for what languages are useful and why?

I can't help but sound like I'm tooting my horn but go with me here.

In international business, mandarin is your best second language, they may eclipse the US in another generation. German is good because it covers you across much of Europe. Arabic is good if you deal with the ME high rollers, but there it also helps to be a dude, and relationships are built over good old boy regaling in those parts.

South America is Spanish and English.

Worthwhile Indian business is done in British English.

That pretty much covers it.

Merci vielmal. (Even though I already got this app during a previous freebie promo.)

Those who aren't interested in learning German should watch Mosalingua. They often have other languages, including French, on sale for free.
