$399 USD means it’s going to be $500 CAD.

The main plus is that you don’t need to use a housing, but the Hero4 silver is better buy if you don’t need it small

Other than attaching the gopro to your helmet and what not... What makes it good? The specs on the gopro seem similar to say the Galaxy S5 camera phone.

are you comparing all action cams to phone cameras?

basically. all gopros have extensive mounts for every extreme sport use, waterproof down to diving depths, ultra wide angle lens, shockproof and small enough you can mount them anywhere, decent ease of use

What makes Gopro the most popular is that they have the top or near top video/image quality for their size and their ecosystem of accessories, and of course the best marketing anywhere, they hire top grade production teams to make demo videos that look impressive. They are by far the number one vendor.

Still waiting for an optically stabilized GoPro, hopefully that'll be coming sooner or later.

As I said, putting the extreme sports aside and mounting ability, what specifically about the specs makes gopro better than camera phones like the S5. I ask this because I see people taking everyday photos using the gopro where others can easily use their phone.

I'm not asking about marketing ability or accessories...But the technology

ok, it’s a fair question.

Spec and hardware wise, there is nothing to these things. That’s why there are a number of competitors from China that practically equal the spec for less money. Certainly the profit margin on go pros is high considering the parts inside which are fairly standard chips like Sony sensors, Ambarella camera chips, Qualcomm chips etc.

However, it’s arguable that the gopros have the best picture quality and that would be attributed to continual refinement of their firmware and the quality of their video processing. You’re paying the big money for the ecosystem that’s inherent in being number one vendor, and they spend big to make sure they remain number one.

EDIT: Oh wow.

Hero5 will have 8K recording. 60fps @ 4k.

Mind=blown
Mind will be blown only when it has ois.
