Great Wolf Lodge prices skyrocketing?

Has anyone tried to book a stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls lately?

Since 2014, we take our child to GWL for their birthday. Between 2014 and 2016 - the rates have been between $159 and $199 per night for the standard Family Suite. I just tried to make a reservation on the website and the prices WITH a 25% discount are coming up at $247! That seems to be quite a big jump.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a better rate? Or alternative spots that are similar that they like?

TIA!

Agreed. Also look at discount booking sites... As they'll often have access to last minute deals, or rooms that traditionally go unsold.

Fact is the Travel & Entertainment sector has been undergoing an across the board price adjustment in the last 12 months. This sector suffered greatly due to the Great Recession of 2008, and in order to survive kept prices artificially low for an unusual length of time. Now that the economy is making great strides in the US, and people are again spending on luxuries (such as vacations etc) this sector has seen a substantial increase... Since 2005 one could get a 3 star mid range hotel room for about $ 100. So a decade long price freeze if you will.

Today that same room has gone up to $ 125 to $ 150 on average (a 25-50% jump)

So your example of $ 159 to $ 199, now being $ 247 ... Unfortunately, is quite realistic for 2017.

No surprise ... look who owns it - Pattison.

Double check your bill for the "special" visitors tax that many place puts onto your bill. It not a tax but a way to grab money from you. It could be called a business improvement fee/tax or something like that. Google it. CBC Marketplace show did another show on this "tax". You don't have to pay this fee. There are other legit. hotel taxes that you must pay but not this one.

Those going to Niagara Falls or a few of the other cities which have this tax should know they are in for these additional sneaky fees.

OP might get more suggestions if this was asked in the proper category - travel.

The Ontario minimum wage went up last October, 2017 is Canada's 150th birthday and hydro rates cost more-though a 25% hydro reduction (including that 8% OST) is said to be coming
in the provincial spring budget-three things that come to mind to explain room rates.
I also read that the two casinos in Niagara Falls have had tenders put out for renovations but NiagaraFallsReview indicated the mayor wants 4 assurances attached to any renos, not just maximizing
provincial revenues.

Pro-Tip, always book 1 night @ GWL, they will usually offer you a 2nd night at a decent (maybe not great) discount.

Update on this "Tourist Marketing Fee" to be broadcast this Friday (March 3rd) on CBC Marketplace.
