Recommendations for purchasing a new air conditioner

Hi,

Looking to purchase a new air conditioner as our current one is about 30 years old! It would need to cool a 1500 square-foot home.

Does anyone have any recommendations or positive experiences? As a starting point, I’m not sure if I want to use a large company like Enercare or just go anywhere that would have units with a certain warranty.

Any testimonials are appreciated.

It entirely depends upon your budget and requirements and who you are comfortable with. Big companies are definitely much more expensive as they have lot of over heads.
Brand makes a difference but correct installation is the most important factor.

There are a few HVAC contractors on RFD. One of the highly recommended ones is @newlyborn very honest and reliable. You can see a bunch of reviews located here - new-furnace-air-conditioner-humidifier-time-2322131/25/

Thank you for this. Having the air conditioner changed is something that I have not had to do before so all of this insight is extremely appreciated.

One of the important things will be to go with a good recommended HVAC company that has lots of positive reviews.

Another thing to look for is when they replace the Air Conditioner outside they will also replace a part on the inside above your furnace which is called an A Coil. You want this A Coil to match the same brand of Air Conditioner you are getting installed. So for example If you buy a Carrier AC then the A coil that goes on the inside should be also made by Carrier. Some companies may try to give you an off brand A Coil because they are cheaper so this way they charge the customer full price but give them a cheaper brand so they make more profit. Also OEM brand like a Carrier brand will usually be better overall then after market brand. Of course there are many brands and the HVAC company you decide to go with should offer you multiple brands. If they only want to sell you 1 or 2 brands its because thats all they sell and get bigger discounts when they sell more of a certain brand.

Most brands are going to all be similar in terms of quality the most important thing is to have it installed properly and to manufacture specs so you get the most life out of it. Some contractors may cut corners or not size it properly for your home and they may reduce its life.

From Consumer Reports:
Reliability and Satisfaction
Using the information provided by our members, we calculated ratings for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Of the 21 brands captured in our survey only one, Trane, earned an Excellent mark on both measures.

To calculate predicted reliability, we used our survey data to estimate how likely a system is to break or cease to sufficiently cool a home by the end of the eighth year. In addition to Trane, Armstrong and Ducane earned an Excellent reliability rating. Seven other brands earned a favorable rating of Very Good; and seven brands earned a rating of Good, which is just average.

In this survey, no brand earned a Poor reliability rating, but Coleman, Goodman, Luxaire, and York received a subpar Fair rating. People should take this into account if they’re considering buying a central AC system from one of these brands.

Our owner satisfaction rating is based on the percentage of members who say they’re extremely likely to recommend their central air brand. Five brands got a top rating of Excellent for satisfaction, including Trane, American Standard, Bryant, Lennox, and Carrier. Armstrong and Ducane earned Very Good satisfaction ratings, as did Rheem and Ruud. The other 12 brands earned a rating of Good (average) for owner satisfaction. (None received a Fair or Poor rating.)

Members can check the reliability ratings for all 21 brands

Did you end up purchasing a new AC and from where? I'm in market for one as well and curious.

Thanks!
