The Green Knight (Dev Patel Arthurian fantasy July 30)

High score at RT so probably specialist entertainment for cineastes 'cause audience score is much less enthusiastic

This is the first movie in the last year I've wanted to see on a big screen - going to check it out this weekend.
And I feel that this review gives one a good idea of what to expect - especially around audiences either loving or hating it.

It's giving me a Tarsem 'The Fall' vibe. As this is one of my favourite visual movies, I hope I'm right.

Movie audiences gave The Green Knight a C+ grade.

So it's not review bombing just arthouse colliding with mainstream expectations

GTA (not the game)
Went to see this earlier today. (In case @fryguy1987 is wondering, there were maybe ten people besides the two friends I went with, so about a baker's dozen in the auditorium.)

This is a pretty heady film with lots of ambiguity, so it's wide open for interpretation. I've never seen Dev Patel better than he is this movie: when he takes on the Green Knight in Arthur's court, he totally sells his panic, that of someone who made a rash decision and realizes very quickly that he's in way over his head. His Gawain is an odd mixture of a person who claims humility (he repeatedly and freely admits he's not a knight) but at the same time assumes the appearance of a great hero (people refer to him as a knight several times because of the way he's dressed and the arms he's carrying).

Alicia Vikander was so good that she had me completely fooled: I had heard going in that she plays two roles, but I totally didn't recognize her in the first one. I thought she was some Irish actress that I hadn't seen before. Vikander just totally blew me away with the contrast between the parts she has.

The story involves one of those journeys that takes place both externally and internally. Gawain really wants to be a knight, but he lacks experience and doesn't really know what becoming one really means. When he goes on the quest to find the Green Knight, he very obviously doesn't have 'street smarts' and certainly doesn't possess the nobility and strength of character that we associate with members of the Round Table. In fact, the point of Gawain's quest is to find courage and honour, and he doesn't do it by fighting Orcs or dark wizards.

This is a pretty low-key movie that isn't too bothered about holding your hand so you're definitely going to have to work to put together several puzzle pieces to arrive at your own conclusions. I certainly don't mind this approach to storytelling when it's done right, and I would have to say that movie stays on course for the most part. At the same time, I can see people who prefer straightforward popcorn movies with lots of action really hating it, so it's a good thing there are a lot of options for folks who lean that way.

Even though A24 just promoted a “One. Knight. Only.” home screening of the film for Wednesday, August 18, the studio revealed yesterday that The Green Knight will be available to rent online through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, Fandango Now, Redbox, etc. starting Thursday, August 19.
