Grubs

Just finished overseeding and top dressing our new lawn. It’s been growing well the last week.

The last two days raccoons and skunks have shown up to eat apparently the grubs in my lawn. How do I get rid of the grubs? It says nematodes really only work in the fall on the larvae?

I just tried a new product "Scott's Grub b' Gone" literally yesterday. I have no idea if it works but it may be an option. Scott's says it's better than nematodes but that remains to be seen. I believe this is a brand new product so reviews are hard to come by. It's easy to apply. Just spread it like fertilizer and water it in. $30 buck covers a little over 100m2.

Are you sure they are eating the grubs and not your grass seed?

I have the nice holes they’ve dug all over the yard. Free aeration?

I have used BioAdvanced 24 hour grub killer plus in the past with success. Purchased in the states at the time.

Squirrels will dig holes to dig up grass and vegetable seed on the lawn and garden.

When is the best time to treat for grubs, spring, summer, fall?

I had a skunk rip up my front yard (caught on video) and a squirrel dig up holes in backyard (caught many times by myself!). It is so frustrating having these animals dig up the yard!

The skunks basically ripped the ground apart and scattered it everywhere whereas the squirrels dig little holes about 2 to 3 inches deep, 1 to 2 inch diamter with the dirt pushed to the side.

Depends on what you are using. MOST things work well against the grubs only when they are young - ie in the larvae stage of the development - so after the eggs are hatched in August. This is why most products recommend that you apply their product in the Summer before the eggs hatch so that it can be in the soil to kill them.

Note > the most popular product in Canada are nematodes but they are only 40% effective and will take multiple years of application in order to kill off enough of the grubs so that the crows, raccoons... don't attack your grass. I've found GrubEx from the US the most effective product but that also only works against the larvae...

This. I thought I had grubs too a couple of years ago but was so relieved that it was actually chinch bugs - grubs are really hard to get rid of and there aren't too many effective solutions to get rid of them.

Make sure you indeed have grubs. If you're going solely based on holes in your backyard without seeing first hand what caused it, I would caution against that because that's not a good indicator. I have holes in my backyard from a groundhog...chipmunks and squirrels also dig up EVERYTHING...they're a real nuisance. The fact you recently overseeded and topdressed to me suggests squirrels - anything that is fresh/new will dig up.What makes you think you have grubs other than the holes? Have you actually seen the skunks and raccoons?

I have seen multiple skunks and raccoons in the backyard. We back onto a forest. Just this morning there were 2 raccoons and a skunk.
Pretty sure it is grubs since my lawn was super dead. Looked like grub damage from eating the roots.

If raccoons and skunks dig up your lawn it will get destroyed. It will look like someone randomly attacked your lawn with a shovel.

If you're finding baseball size holes it is most probably a rodent such as a squirrel.
