GTA - Purchasing a car that is a few years old with regular milage vs newer with higher then normal milage?

GTA - Purchasing a car that is a few years old with regular milage vs newer with higher then normal milage?

Tough to summarize thread title but pretty much sums up my question.

I was in the market for a pre owned vehicle and was looking at a Toyota Corolla.

I was looking for something from 2014+.

I noticed most 2014's have an average milage of about 50-60k which is fine.

But I recently found one 2016 that is being sold through a Honda dealership that has 55k milage on it.

I assume the previous owner must have commuted every day a great distance with mostly highway given its milage. The dealership assured me its not an ex rental and is a trade in.

I was just wondering what would be better

-2014 with about 55-60k milage
or
-2016 with about 55k milage

The 2016 would have the manufacturer warranty still for about another 5k while most 2014's are done their original warranty.

Any advice appreciated

I'll go for low mileage. Mileage is usually better indicator of a cars life unless it's been sitting around for years.

If they say it's not a rental and you don't see signs of it being a rental then should be okay. Do a PPI and if it checks through then go for the 2016.

I bought a 2010 with 80k kms.
Most of the cars from 2010 were between 120,000-160,000 kms.
Nothing wrong with car . Bought it from an elderly gentleman.

My opinion
Getting used . Deal with a private sale. Avoid dealerships. Save money on the BS admin charges.
Go for the 2014. You will save money on insurance too. 2016 .. More insurance. You being in GTA. Also if you can go outside GTA . Avoid GTA. Cheaper cars.

I disagree, rentals don't generally see that many kms.

Not saying it is or isn't but the norm is not that high.

It's probably someone driving from a far away suburb daily for commuting.

So aka highway mileage which is better than city always but mileage is mileage.

Personally I'd go for the 2016. That's 5000km of warranty to make sure nothing bad happens.

Very easily could be a non-rental. I put 80-100,000km on my car yearly. Just like others have said make sure to get it inspected and checked out thoroughly. But same goes for the 2014.

GTA is a unique place where people will commute 100+ km a day to get to work. So it wouldn't be unusual to see high mileage, late-model cars for sale.

Not the most scientific way of telling highway miles vs. city but looking at the front end of the car (hood, grill, bumper) for pebble chips may indicate highway usage. Also, if you can get a view of the radiator, lots of bugs and dings could be a similar indicator.

Though some people will wash their engine bay and/or apply touch-up paint.

*if* it's a commuter car with high miles, it doesn't matter if it's a city car or highway car. it'd still be sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in the GTA at the end of the day. if car was coming from new market to downtown toronto, 1/4 is highway and rest is bumper to bumper traffic

bingo. but with Honda's, you can buy extended warranty as long as the car is below 100k. Man, Honda Canada has upped the prices of extended warranty so many times. With Toyota, they only sell the Gold and Plat warranty within 30 days of ownership without penalty.

When I first got one for my Civic in 2003, a 7-year 140k km warranty only costs $700-800. Now, it costs around $2,500

Forgot to mention to test the Accord CVT when cold, like you being the first to drive it off the parking lot.

There are reports of judder/shuddering on Honda's CVT but perhaps affect only 5-10% and mostly when ambient temperature is cold.

The new Accord looks very nice but I have no reason to get rid of our 11 Accord coupe since its resale value is like $13-16k (enough only to buy a Micra, haha). It's been reliable with fuel injection, double wishbone front suspension, regular 5 AT and VSA (stability control).

The all new 2018 Accord should come out in September though used Honda's hold their values well so no need to wait, except for my coupe, haha, but it's not for sale anyway.

Agree on buying it private than going thru dealerships.

They make way more profit to sell a used car than a brand new.

I bought 3 cars private and had no issue if you do your homework.

Wish we had those used car wholesale middlemen like they have in the US.

They buy the car putting a floor on the price and if it sells for more, the extra money is split 50/50 between the company and the seller.

I'm thinking only sellers who don't like dealing with all sorts of people (mostly women and maybe those who are too busy) will opt for these kinds of car selling services though since cutting the middle man is usually best.
