Handscraped Floors

We are thinking about getting Black Walnut Handscraped floors but have been reading that black walnut is soft and not ideal if you have kids (we have 2 boys age 3 & 1). Should I worry about the wood being soft if it is handscraped anyways? Our second choice is hickory but we read that it is not very stable. Does a handscraped floor look bad if it expands?

Thanks for your opinions

Use the link above to see which wood is harder. If it's handscrapped, dinging it here and there by little boys shouldn't be a big problem. However, handscrapped refers to the fact that the scrapped lines are all in one direction. What if your kid drags a pickaxe in the perpendicular direction. That's going to ruin the floors real quick. Of course I am exaggerating, but the general safe zone is to go with harder wood if you have little kids. You never know what they find and drag.
