Has Shopper's Drug Mart replaced all of their checkout lanes with self-checkout machines?

Has SDM replaced all of their cashiers and checkout counters with self-checkout machines? The location nearest to me has replaced everything with machines, with the exception of one customer service desk for buying lotto tickets and paying in cash.

I used to work in retail before, so this kind of makes me sad a little bit. I'm not sure if this is going to be the general direction of things but it's just feels weird, that's all.

Not my local Shoppers... They installed 3 self checkouts but still have 2 cash registers.

I believe they HAVE to have cash registers for things like lotto and gift cards.

Both the Shoppers' I regularly visit have 3 self checkouts and 2 cashier checkouts (although usually only 1 is open). There's never a line at the self-checkouts so that's where I normally head when I'm done shopping.

SDM needs to keep at least one cashier checkout for the seniors especially during the senior day. Self checkout needs a cashier to apply a code for senior discount.
Have too many phones... This is how I limit my monthly phone payment.

I actually prefer the self-checkout machines, though they're not convenient for grocery items that do not have a barcode on them. The ones at my local pharmaprix logs out every now and then, and an attendant has to enter the password to log it back in.
This too shall pass...

yep shoppers wants to become like those amazon stores where you don't need any cashier. there's a couple of stores I've been too and noticed the smaller one pushes you to the self check out even for lotto tickets while the larger ones the cashiers don't mind customers. One even had a bell as the cashier said that way she can walk around the store as its not always busy.

if shoppers wants to push people for self check out give them bonus points eg. 200 for using the self check out etc

Another step towards doing the stuff that the company used to pay people to do. Soon you will need to open up your Optimum app, scan the item you want to buy and when you finish hit checkout. If you need a paper receipt, it will be sent you your email where you can print it out at home.

For stores like Shoppers Drug Mart, self-checkout makes total sense. Hardly anyone uses the ones at my store. And I'm ok with that, because it makes it so much faster for me. If I'm only popping in to grab 1 or 2 products, it makes life so much easier. Places where you have a whole cart full are more difficult. My Zehrs has the small version of the self-checkout. So if there's a huge line for cashiers, and I opt for self-checkout, I have to make sure I only have a basket or less. There's not even enough room for a shopping cart.

Self-checkouts has its merits. It is not a bad thing for the customers except for transactions that need human intervention.

Merits:
- Can pack and optimize bag space at own pace
- Can pack fragile items gently (some cashiers would just drop fragile items in the bag risking damage)
- No need to deal with the odd rude, unfriendly cashier

For coupons, there is an attendant that can enter the override price or coupon code

it does but forcing people to use it is where i think the line should be drawn. If we are playing cashier now what happens if you forget to scan something? the same can happen that the cashier mis-scans something as they are in a rush. do you get free bags same as a disgruntled employee does not charge you for them?

I'll never go back if they're going to use their customers as free checkout clerks and screw their own workers out of jobs.

To be honest... I'd welcome this, especially if I could pair like a bluetooth barcode scanner (cameras work, but they're slow)
Or better yet do what Amazon is doing and just literally walk out of the store.
Do you not have anything else to do rather than argue with strangers on the internet
Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

I'm sure the number of people who honestly declare how many bags they are using at self checkout is a fairly low percentage.

Lol, how much bonus did you get when you used the ATM last time? Smiling Face With Open Mouth

No offence, but if you dont like self-checkout, you should find a store which has cashiers and move on. Nobody is forced to shop at Shoppers.

Mine still has 3 and 3 though I've only seen all 3 cashier stations opened at once. Use self-check for a quick trip and a very few items. Cashier for senior's day and markdowns, or better yet, markdowns on seniors days - once got stuff for free, or should have been paid $0.01 per item to take them away but I didn't press them on it.

no bonus points but I can go see a teller and take out my $40 paycheque without being walked over to the atm by said employee. I am not against self checkout I like the ones at Costco and used the ones at shoppers but I am against it being forced on people when the person is right there. this is from personal experience

If you think about the population they serve, yes that can be incredibly difficult.

I totally understand your point but other than voting with your wallet, what else can you do?
