TBH I am still trying to get Ep 1 finished off, but I like what I see. Good casting & cinematography.

Granted only one episode (of a seven-episode limited HBO series) has been released but it's very promising so far with its ability to intrigue.
Equally funny and uneasy + I love lots of what Mike White has directed, so for me, early on in the viewing, it's well worth watching.
TheHans wrote: We watched it also. It was a strange show. Kind of funny, kind of satirical. I already have a list of characters I want to slap silly -- the newlywed hubby (played by Jake Lacy from "I'm Dying Up Here") and the daughter and her BFF. All three LOL. I love Connie Britton in everything, so that's a plus for me. But at the end I was like "OK, so what?" There was some uneasiness, it's true, as you know something's going to happen...

Since only a six-episode limited series, will wait until it ends to binge watch it.

I love it. Huge Mike White fan and "Enlightened" is one of my favourite shows ever. Since it's based in Hawaii, I keep hoping for Amy Jellicoe to show up.

Halfway through and the show is great. Last episode focussing on sexuality for the most part was my favourite so far

I'm not familiar with Mike White or his work - never heard of Enlightened but I'm definitely going to check it out after I finish re-watching seasons 1 & 2 of Succession (in preparation for season 3...I have a bad memory - this is why I like watching a show once the series is finished lol).

I search for thread titles not inside the thread...I was wondering why I didn't see anything from you! I finished watching episode 3...any guesses who you think is in body bag?

At first I was digging the music but now it's kinda getting on my nerves. I'm so happy see Natasha Rothwell - I loved her on Insecure (I'm so sad it's their last season). It's also interesting that 3 of the actors in this show are also in Promising Young Woman...wonder if that's a coincidence. Most of the characters are kind of annoying but in an entertaining way (I think that's the point). The Shane character is so sleezy - he's so good at it lol.

Anyone else think Steve Zahn and Justin Bateman kind of look similar?

White's most mainstream effort so far has been 'School of Rock' - a really fun comedy masquerading as a family-friendly flick.

Shane is so different here than how he was portrayed in 'The Office' huh. Hope to see more of him in the future - an all-American dude with solid acting.

Right now it's anyone's guess for who dies, but I'm thinking the blonde teen maybe kills her best friend/the guy her friend's hooking up with?
What are your thoughts?

I'm trying to remember 'Shane' on The Office...it's been so long and I didn't watch it regularly but if I remember correctly he played a kind of geek, right?

As for who died...I'm thinking Paula too or maybe Tanya...I was trying figure out her getup on the boat, what was that about lol. She's good actress too. Good cast overall.

He was 'Plop' (AKA Pete) - he played the love interest of Erin (the receptionist that takes over from Pam) - and was in the last 1-2 seasons.
I really hope it's not Tanya (the original MILF - remember American Pie?) - what a sad life she has already.

Yes! I'm thinking the same about who dies. Or maybe it's wishful thinking because that daughter is so obnoxious.

As already mentioned, School of Rock is probably his most known, but he was also the writer of Orange County, Nacho Libre and wrote for some tv shows like Freaks & Geeks and Dawson's Creek. What first drew me to him was a single cam show called Cracking Up from the early 2000s with Molly Shannon and Jason Schwartzman that was super hilarious and ahead of it's time. Sadly it got cancelled in its first season.

He also competed with his dad on two seasons of The Amazing Race and was runner up on one season of Survivor.

So with one episode left in this excellent miniseries what are your predictions on how this is gonna pan out?

SPOILERS

I think it will show that rich privileged white people ultimately triumph, but the working-class will put up a just and solid fight.
In terms of who dies, I think it might still be one of the two bratty girls (or maybe Quinn, and somehow it's linked to the boat rides he's been going on with the local boys?)

SPOILERS BELOW, PLEASE HIGHLIGHT:

I was thinking at first that Alexandra Daddario's character, Rachel, was free and clear because her hubby was at the airport in the first scene. But after watching that opening scene again, I started thinking maybe that will be the final statement on wealth and privilege, in that hubby kills her and gets away with it, sitting in the airport like it was nothing. On the other hand, I really want that daughter gone LOL, so I'm thinking the friend (Paula) kills her to stop her from ratting-out the thieving guy, Kai. That annoying daughter clearly knows something's up. How tragic was that? It won't end well for Kai. There could be two killings FWIW -- one of the guests (the one being loaded on the plane) and Kai.

And yet another great scene with Alexandra Daddario, this one with with Molly Shannon. The reactions from Daddario when Shannon was calling her a trophy wife were amazingly sad with the realization of what she'd done to her life.

I'm still trying to figure what to make of this show ....it's quite slow IMO especially episode 4.
SPOILER

Assuming it's one of the 8 guests given the body bag was leaving Hawaii and not another guest, one guess is Rachel commits suicide or perhaps the 2 girls have at it and it ends tragically for one of them. Except for Shane, the rest of the characters are soooooo depressing. I had high hopes for this show but it's just been mediocre - not good or bad.

Looks like all the guesses in this thread were pretty off.

Solid miniseries. Quite contemporary, funny and well-acted. Enjoyed it a lot.

By the way did anyone catch the Easter eggs going on with the connection between the Shane character and the role he played in The Office?

Armond takes a 'plop' on Shane's clothes and his nickname in The Office is Plop. The other one is Shane wears a Cornell hat and the character of Andy in The Office went to Cornell and eventually Plop dates his girlfriend.

Yep, that definitely didn't go the way I expected. Lots and lots of sadness throughout the episode. With a glimmer of true happiness at the end that's bound to be short lived. Looking forward to see what White will do with season two.

When Armand got the call from his boss I figured then it was him - it became quite obvious once he starting snorting lol. I even knew he was going to either urinate or defecate when he entered the room...they really didn't need to be that specific about in the scene, totally gross.

I enjoyed the series but can't say it was all that great or maybe I missed the point. I would give it a 6 or a 7.

Here are some thoughts - would love to hear yours:
  • Paula may be got some insights into her misdirected anger. Olivia IMO ended up being a really good friend - she didn't judge her, in fact she showed a lot of compassion for her. I'm not sure I totally understood what insight she had during the last dinner when the family was talking
  • Quin - he was able to connect with others his age once his devices were gone, showing the importance of human connection and the impact it has on ones purpose and zest for life
  • Rachel & Shane - they rather be unfilled and miserable than be alone, which is reflective of society. Rachel ignored signs up until the wedding and even when she tried to end it, she keep ignoring her instincts
  • Tanya - perhaps that being vulnerable (i.e., showing how you are) forces to drop the baggage and masks and allows for more honest and authentic relationships
  • Belinda - not really what to make sure of her storyline except that you can't just give and give and never receive ...Tanya looked out for herself but did Belinda look out for herself

Same. Pretty disappointed. Even the friend on the trip was annoying.
